Solve : No user input on web forms / script error (line 1545) trying to use sys restore?

Answer»

A friend brought his Dell computer by for help. The PC displayed the symptoms in the subject line. He had removed several programs, including JAVA, and installed several Windows XP updates. Then the symptoms began. I found no malware on the PC, and reinstalled JAVA, but no improvement in the situation. cCleaner displays 3 months worth of system restore points, but Windows system restore apparently can not see them. I can only guess that the Windows updates may have installed incorrectly and possible corrupted certain Windows files. User input is possible in I/E page headers (i.e., Google search, URL addresses, etc.), but not in the body of the pages. Links do not work either. Outlook Express email works, but it is impossible to INSERT any text in the body of any email being created or replied to.
All these symptoms occur in Safe Mode also.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.Do a repair installAllan:

Well - that was my plan. Problem is - the user can't locate his XP Media Center Edition 2002 reinstallation disk, and the closest thing I have is the 2005 version, which I'm reluctant to use for fear of creating more instead of fewer, problems. I'm trying to locate a copy of the 2002 version to beg, borrow or steal, but no luck so far.

THANKS for responding. If the CD you have is in facta Media Center Edition you can continue on with the repair install...
The dates are irrelevant.
Keep in mind all Windows updates will be gone so you will need to revisit that issue...

Repair Install of XP...

I suggest reading it THRU and printing it out before starting...

Backup any critical data 1st.Patio:

I've been secretly hoping for just such a RESPONSE as you provided. As soon as I finish this thank you/acknowledgment, I'll get things underway. I had decided to try it tomorrow anyway - since I
already have a complete backup of the system using Acronis True IMAGE software.

Thanks so much for this advice. Now, if it only works...For Patio (and any others with interest in this issue):

I just completed the XP Repair. Had a number of framework.net error reports in the process, but I'm hopeful these matters will resolve once I get all Windows Updates caught up. My MCE disk had SP2 installed, and I'm downloading 74 updates following SP2 as I type this message. I can already accomplish the things which I couldn't do before (see the subject of this issue).

Thanks for the encouragement, Patio. No problem...and Welcome Aboard ! !

Not to worry about the /net framework errors...it just means certain apps are expecting it to be there and it's not installed yet...
Windows updates should cure it.
But keep in mind that .net is not the same as Service Paks...they are not cumulative...but standalone...so if it requests one that's not installed gtab the self installer.

Good to hear you're 1/2 way home...
