Solve : Setup.exe and system restore.? |
Answer»

Hi all,
I have a problem which hopefully someone can help me with as this problem is driving me mad!
Firstly, i am not a computer whizz but i do know my way around a computer slightly.

I have a Dell E520 with Vista 32bit as my OS.

Right, to the problem:

I have recently uninstalled Flight Sim X and a lot of add-ons from my system as i needed to clean my hard drive up. I managed to uninstall most apart from two add-ons.

When i try to remove them from within Control panel/add-remove programs it comes up with "Setup.exe has stopped working and will not let me uninstall these two programs, which happen to be from the same company.

I have looked everywhere else on my computer to see where they could be but the only place they seem to exist is in the add/remove programs page!!!

Please can someone help me with removing these programs?

Also, i thought about doing a system restore as i thought it might have been me uninstalling Flight Sim X before the add-ons but my restore points only go back one day!!! Is this correct, can i somehow get to an EARLIER date?

Any help is greatly appreciated?

P.S. When i try to re-install them it says they are already installed!!!! Within the add/remove programs i have noticed that the file sizes have reduced considerably from about 10gb to 1-2mb!

I am open to any offers of help as i am struggling.

Thanks,

Ross.

Ross first off Welcome to CH !

The best way to tackle this dilemna right now would be to boot into safemode...
This is done by powering up and tapping F8 rpeatedly before you see the Windows splash screen.
Then find the offending folders of the programs you want to get rid of and delete first the contents of the folders and then the folders themselves...
Re-boot after every operation and see if this clears things out.
If not post back with any error messages and we'll go from there...Thank you very much patio.

I am on nights at work tonight but i will try tomorrow first thing and go from there.

Thanks once again and please keep an eye on this thread tomorrow.

Cheers, its nice to know there is help out there.

Ross. That's what we're here for...and don't worry about any time delay...i may ignore this for 3 days.

Patio,
When you say re-boot after every operation, do you mean after each main folder has been deleted or after every deletion of a single file?

Regards,

Ross.Patio,
Safe mode did not work. Any further suggestions?

I thought i might be able to system restore but for some reason my system restore will not let me pick an earlier date than two days ago!

It used to have an option saying "Choose a restore Point" or "Recommended restore point" but this has gone. Is there a way of bypassing this option and rerstoring to an older date?

Thanks in advance,

Ross.Interesting it didn't take in safemode...
Have you checked with the manuf. of the program or perhaps they have a Forum since it is a game...
System Restore might not have done it either as it concentrates mostly on Windows system files and changes.

P.S. Double check to see if a listing still exists in Add/Remove Programs thru Control Panel.
Barring all that you could DLoad install and try CCleaner which is FREE and may remove the stubborn entries.
Let us Know...Patio,
I am in contact with the Games Forum but they don't seem to know what is going on!

The listing is definately still in the add/remove prgrams in control panel but the file size has reduced considerably!

What is dload install?

I will try CCleaner as i have read about this. I tried regcure but this did not work, is it the same kind of thing?

Do you have any idea about my System Restore problem? It does not give me the option to choose a date older than five days. Why?

Cheers,

Ross.

DLoad = download...sorry but i abbreviate it and forget some may not know what it means.
CCleaner is one of the safer reg cleaners out there and many here recommend it over others.
As far as the System Restore points your old restores are not there if they are not listed.
Check to see how much hard drive space you have for Restore and how much free space you have total. Thanks for your help Patio but i think i have sorted it.

I had to make a temp folder and move files from my Install Shield INSTALLATION folder into this new folder.

I was then able to remove the two programs from the programs menu at long last.

I then used CCleaner to clean up my comp. I also uninstalled Norton 360 and everything seems to be fine now.

I think that the problem was a broken uninstaller in the two products.

Thanks again for all your help.

regards,

Ross.Good NEWS indeed Ross...
Did you check on that system restore detail yet ? ?
It should be able to save more than one or two restore points.

The Installer issue makes sense since they were both products of the same Co.
One of the reasons i swear by Total Uninstall.

Anyways good to hear you're fixed up.
Hang on to CCleaner...it's a fine product.Patio,
From reading further threads, i set a manual restore point so i think once you have done this it deletes older dates. I had about 6 restore points but they only went back a day as i was uninstalling and re-installing a lot of products in a short space of time! Something to note really.

Thanks again, i will check out Total Uninstall. You're more than Welcome !Just a bit of advice for you, Ross. When uninstalling games/programs with expansions, it's always best to uninstall the expansions first, then the main program. Basically, take them off in the reverse order you put them on. I had a problem similar to this myself once when I uninstalled the main game before the expansion... I'll be darned if I can remember what game that was though...Quaxo,
Thanks for the advice, i knew that but this time i did it i forget them!!! Oooops.
Cheers anyway,

Ross.

| |
