So that's a new (never before used) hard drive right?

yes, brand new western digital 320gb....maybe you and patio didnt get a chance to see where this post started but I listed my computer parts in earlier posts but here it is again:

GIGABYTE EP43-UD3L motherboard
INTEL PENTIUM E7600 Core2 Duo 3.06GHz, core 45nm, fsb 1066 MHz, L2 Cache 3MB, socket 775
MASSCOOL Model # 8WA741 Copper heat pipes processor fan
GSKILL pc2 8500 2GB x 2 sticks= 4GB Memory
WESTER DIGITAL 320GB 8 MB 7200 SATA hdd
NVIDIA GEFORCE 9400 GT PCIE video card
hdd fan, dvd fan, 4 case fans + side fan
Windows XP Pro sp3 if I ever get it installedUse the WD diagnostic tools )free Dload( to prepare the drive for an OS install...
Early on in the setup process you will see aprompt at the bottom of the screen stating "PRESS F6 to install additional drivers"...do that.
Then insert your MBoard driver CD and it will pickup and install the SATA drivers and continue the install...I would set the BIOS to default settings.
If that didn't help...
I would test the memory
http://www.memtest86.com/

If the memory passes, I would try a different data cable for the hard drive and run hard drive diagnsotics.
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=9999&sid=30&lang=enWOW...what an experience! Many thanks to everyone that helped... I changed the AHCI to DISABLED AND used the Western Digital diagnostic tools AND installed the drivers for SATA by downloading from the Gigabyte mb disk to a removable little 2GB usb drive. I PUT the usb in the back and also inadvertently used WINDOWS XP HOME s/p2, (which is an upgrade!) and I didnt realize it had downloaded past the point I had been stuck @ for 3 1/2 weeks.

One thing though, with AHCI disabled, my dvd/cdrw isnt listed in boot first list but SHOWS in the cmos. When AHCI is enabled the dvd is listed where you can select it to boot at whatever position AND you will get the 0x0000007E blue screen error again.

That was truly a headache but I gotta say THANKS to JJ3000, patio, dahlarbear and the 'BC Programmer' who simply said, "I can guarantee, this is related to SATA."
you could try looking in your BIOS and change your SATA settings to "compatible" instead of "AHCI" or whatever it may be; or try installing the drivers via F6 during setup again.

SO im up and running and grateful, Thank you ALL!!
excellent work! XP and SATA can be a real pain in the but, as you now know from experience. Is your DVD-drive SATA as well?Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 13, 2009, 11:06:02 PM
