Solve : 2 Copies of Windows...help with removal of old...?

Answer»

Hey there.  I am running XP and about three days after GETTING it i got a fun virus...kept giving me an add for virus program in the system tray.  Well, I am not excessively computer savy but i know a little and feel comfortable.  I thought i reformatted/reinstalled Windows, using my boot disk that came with the PC.

When it restarted I got the screen about selecting which operating system to use.  The old windows folder is still there and i can run the other windows still with the virus in it.  That means it is still somewhere in the computer and I want to get rid of it.

How can I get rid of that copy of windows, and all of the files that go with it?  Do i have to try to format and re-install again?  or is there a way to save what I have already put on this new copy of XP I have been working with for the past two MONTHS?

Thank you in advance...

I am running XP Pro on a Systemax BTO Computer with Dual 3.2 GHZ and 2.5G RAMRe-install Windows, try and throw both of the Windows copies of your PC.You should be able to format the bad partition with the OS discs. QUOTE from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 10, 2007, 09:46:35 PM

You should be able to format the bad partition with the OS discs.

He has more than one install of XP...this doesn't neccessarily mean they are on different partitions. In fact if there are 2 Windows folders they are on the same partition.

Personally i would wipe the drive and start fresh...after backing up the data you want to save. This method will cause the least amount of headaches...you could allways remove the old one through the msconfig boot ini WINDOW?
start/run/msconfig//
at the top of the window that opens click on the boot ini tab
click on check all boot paths which will give you the option of which version to remove.
I aint a wiz with pc's but I had this very same problem and was given this solution. hope this helpsThat only removes the boot option not the Windows install...
