Solve : 4 Bit display? Help please.?

Answer»

Hi,

My monitor wasn't staying on. I couldn't restart my computer so I hard booted it. When it comes back up, the display is 4 bit. I try to change it, it won't change. I updated the video card, nothing. I've restarted the computer and still nothing. Not sure what I need to do. I appreciate any help.

Thanks! What do you mean by "4 bit" colour? 4 bit greyscale or 16 color? Did you replace the video card, or update the drivers? Did you use the right ones and do it properly?I didn't replace or change anything on my computer. It was working fine until the monitor acted like it wasn't ATTACHED to my computer.

When I go to change the display under display settings, I'll try to set to resolution to high with the colors at "highest 32 bit", I will hit apply and then ok to "do you want to keep these display settings" and it just goes back to saying color "lowest 4 bit".

What is your system model? I can help finding correct video drivers?
What do you mean by 'updated the video card' ?? How did you do this?? (Basically i'm repeating Salmon), but we could do with 'exact' information?

Also, What OS are you using!

I went into device manager, click on the NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and click "update driver software". It searched online for software, found it and updated. It says my driver software for my device is up to date. However right now, looking in the device manager, under display adapters, the Ge Force is listed with a little yellow triangle in front of it.

I uninstalled the Ge Force, rebooted and then had windows reinstall it. Nothing has changed.

Oh and I'm using Vista. What is your PC's model/brand?
Try reinstalling your Video driver here -> HTTP://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-usQuote from: KatieM on April 20, 2011, 07:05:28 PM

DO NOT use Windows update to download / install drivers. Always go to the OEM website. Follow the link in Jason2074's post above.

I went to the given website and downloaded that update. It's still doing what it was doing before. Perhaps a new video cards?Post everything about the PC that you know of...Model# etc...
Still sounds like the wrong drivers installed...

Of course buyng a new vid card would FIX it but we try to fix things without cabbage 1st...Appreciate all the help.

This isn't a new video card, it's been in my computer for a couple years anyway.

My computer is an Emachine model T 5274 , Vista OS, it currently has the GeForce 8400 gs video card. I'm not sure what other info you would need or where I would find it on the computer. Here is the DLoad for your driver...

Make sure to install the driver after downloading.
