Solve : A:,D: and E: drives won't read any media?

Answer»

I have a Dell DIMENSION 2400 PC, running Windows XP, HOME Ed. with SP3.
Dell troubleshooters show all drives functioning normally. All drivers are updated/current.
Microsoft Fix-It (beta) no help -- shows "unreadable media".

Control panel "Properties" show the same for all three:

Space Used = 0
Available = 0
Capacity = 0
File system = Unknown

Primary (C:) drive shows 55 GB available Have run AVG 2011/repaired as need.

Receive no error messages BUT unable to boot to partition utility.... mouse gets frozen in midline: vertical but no lateral movement. Hence can't click on button (works fine in all other apps).I'm sorry, I really don't understand the problem(s) you are experiencing. Can you explain in detail what is going on? And if this involves partitions other than c: drive, what is on them?A: drive - no floppy disk in drive
D: drive - no CD in drive
E: drive - no SD card in card reader

... at a guess...?I suspect a weak/failing CMOS battery may have "floppyseek on boot" re-enabled if this is a recent condition...
Other than that i think Rob has nailed it...Thanks to all (Rob, Allan & Patio).

Have tried numerous "fixes" to no avail (regedit, uninstall/reinstall drivers, ETC.).
Media IS in D: drive. MS Fix-It report says "Media in CD/DVD drive is not readable (Lite-On LTN486S 48x Max).

Have "enabled" VGA, etc. Where can I go from here?Quote from: jelptex on September 08, 2011, 07:35:47 AM

Can you boot from USB without issues? If so it might be a failing DVD drive...Might be worth a look to check the Computer Management (R-click My Computer -> Manage)...Try connecting the optical drive to another PC to check if its making the same behavior.

What did AVG repaired in this process? I have a Dimension 2400 with 2 optical drives and a 80 gig HD and disabled the floppy drive by unhooking the power connector due to some previous booting issues.Quote from: jelptex on September 08, 2011, 07:35:47 AM

What kind of media? This drive will not read DVDs and may struggle with certain disks (coloured, etc.).Thank you all !
Allan: re - partitions. Both drive show BLUE pie chart (i.e. disc full, but values show 0 used, 0 available. Not so on C: drive.

Patio: No "floppyseek" on boot. And, floppy has NEVER been used.

Transfusion: Why would both drives fail at the SAME time?

Kyle: have done disc mgmt/computer mgmt. No dice.

Jason: AVG removed cookies/worms.

Rob: Won't read ANY media --- software, CD, DVD.

Still struggling, guys. Thanks.Quote from: jelptex on September 09, 2011, 04:01:10 AM

A power surge can easily damage drives...I'll second Transfusion on that. Also Quote

Did you check this? Cause it kinds sounds like something BIOS/CMOS related to me... However I wouldn't count hardware failure out of the picture. I had a sound card that got FRIED from a surge and I could only play 1 song afterward, which is really freakn' weird, but weird stuff can happen with power surges too.
