Solve : Adminstrative Rights disappeared?

Answer»

I have a personal computer running Windows 98.  I am the only user, nothing else is connected.  I have always been able to download windows updates, but for some reason now when I try to do a windows update or the SBC updates I get a message saying I must be logged on as the user with administrative rights.  I don't know why it changed.  I've searched for someplace to show myself as the administrator, but all I can find is instructions for newer windows operating systems than 98, and info that all users are administrators on windows 98.

Can someone help me fix this, please?I still have this problem!  I can't do any Windows updates, or SBC antivirus scans, etc.   melstepp......  I was just reading your previous posts and I noticed you said that you cannot run your AV ........ Is it possible that you have a virus in your system ?
Lets try and see ........ GO to this site ..... http://housecall.trendmicro.com/    and click on scan now .

Report the results please

dl65  Hello, I'm having the same problem on XP I went to the link you provided and it cant run a scan because I don't have Java2 Runtime Environment installed. That's exactly one of the THINGS I need Admin priviledges for.  I can't install any programs or printers.

What now?

Thanks, Jim okrobie..... It would be less confusing if you had started your own thread....but never mind ......... if you go into the control panel ......click on User accounts ....... how many show up there ?
BTW is this your pc and are there any other users ?
dl65  Sorry about that.

I have 3 plus guest plus the invisible Administrator account  All 3 of the users that show in the control panel show as being in the administrators group but none have priviledges.  ...and neither does Administrator.

Yes, this is my PC and there are no other users. The only reason I have multiple accounts is that I was trying to create new admin's to see if they had rights.

Thanks
okrobie.... when did this start ?    Did the other users have Admin privledges?

dl65  I'm embarrased to say that it started several months ago but I didn't persue it because I didn't need to install anything.

PS look at my previous post. I added more of my answer. okrobie.....  Ok ....try this reboot into safe mode ( repeatedly tap the F8 key as it STARTS to restart .......) when in safe mode click on start /control panel / User accounts ......... and see if you can create a new account with full admin rights .......
Has any of the other users been playing around in there .......
Let us know if you can .

dl65
okrobie.....  And did you delete any of the users you created or any others?

dl65
I did delete one that I created called "Printers" that was to see if I could create a user who could install printers.

OK I'll be back in a min after safe mode. How about posting a SCREEN shot .........

Well, the new user Test" didn't have any admin rights either. Here is the screenshot.\:
dl65, had a long day. Hafta fold it up for now.  Catch you tomorrow.

Thanks a million, JimGo into the one that has the chessmen as the icon ....... and make sure that its set on computer admin ...as opposed to limited ........... then exit shut down and then LOG in as the admin. ( the password protected one ) then try and go to M/S updates and see if you have any luck .
