Answer» I have put a new hard drive in my Advent 7027 laptop. Installed Windows XP Home edition which came with the laptop. Windows has done its updates and everything works really well, the laptop is actually running FASTER than I can ever remember. My problem is the Wlan. I have internet access through a cable. When I press the Wlan button on the top of the laptop Windows media opens. I can not see Wireless in the device manager. When I installed the utilities cd I noticed the Wlan option was grayed out so I installed it after exploring the cd.Hi,
•Click on Start-->Run and type in services.msc •Right-click on the service called Wireless WLAN Utility and click on Properties. •For the Startup type select Enable (if disable is selected).
A problem can arise when both utilities are enabled and both of them are trying to manage your wireless networks. The solution is to disable one of the utilities. We recommend that you disable the Dell utility and let Windows manage your wireless networks. THANKS for the help. I have run services.msc and looked through the list but the option you suggested is not there. The nearest thing to it is wireless zero configuration which is set to automatic statup type with options for manual or disable.Did you re-install the Advent Drivers ? ? MBoard chipset drivers go 1ST...after that the order does not MATTER...I ran the Advent system recovery disc which came with the laptop. Then installed Drivers from the utilities disc as follows AGP Driver VGA Driver Audio Driver Lan Driver Modem Driver USB 2.0 Driver PCMCIA Driver I do not remember the order I did them in. Finally as the option for Wireless Lan Driver was grayed out and un clickable (is that a word?) I ran the install after exploreing the disc.DLoad and install a fresh copy of the WLAN drivers from their site...Thank you for your help, but I do not know what site to download from. Advent do not apear to have a site, I believe it is a PCWorld brand so I looked on their site but I could not find any Driver downloads there. Basically I am confussed, I have spent a lot of time looking through various sites for drivers and found nothing that suits. I may take the easy option and use a wirless card in the slot, shame since the Laptop has a built in Wireless option which always used to work well. Again thanks for the help, it is appriciated.A quick Google search pointed to a few places mentioning an Intel wireless driver for that specific model, so try here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Wireless+Networking&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+WiFi+Products&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+PRO%2fWireless+2100+Network+Connection
If that doesn't work, you may have to disassemble the laptop and remove the internal wireless card from the laptop. From there, look for a brand name, model number, or something of that nature, Google it, and try to find drivers that way.
You can also download and install Everest and see if it gives you any more information...Thanks, but I have tried that and it had no effect. I am by no means an expert but I think I have something missing that activates the driver. Its as if I do not have wireless on my laptop. (I know I have, it used to work) I just realised there was more to your message, I will try everest and as a last resort look to see if I can find the card in my laptop.
Thanks again. ************ PROBLEM SOLVED !!! *******************
The wireless card was not quit in its slot, it looked like it was but it needed that little click!! The only question now is how did it come out??? I guess I will NEVER know, I do not remember ever dropping the laptop.
Thanks for all the support.
Sometimes there is too much information.Sometimes all we need is a nudge towards the right direction.
