Solve : Another computer problem?

Answer»

I have this desktop computer, 200MMX pentium, 64MB RAM, 3 hard drives. Win98 SE

Whenever I listen to music on this computer (MP3, WAV) the music lags, slows down and has interferance whenever the master hard drive does anything. What could be CAUSING this problem?Has this problem occured recently?

I suggest you do these things on a regular basis

  • Defragment drives
  • Scan for viruses, spyware and trojans
  • Clean registry
  • Remove redundant files
  • Clean case
  • Clean Internet History, cache and files.

It has been doing it since I got it from my mother. I recently reinstalled win98SE because of PROBLEMS. This computer is pretty old, the motherboard was built in 97.The computer may not be suitable for music and video due to it's slow speed.I had another computer with the exact same hardware, and it ran music fine.  My sister also has the same hardware, and it runs music fine too. Maybe there is something wrong with this one.Is the soundcard capable of playing music?

Perhaps you should format and then install Windows if you have not yet done so.I already formatted and reinstalled win98. The soundcard is a SoundBlaster 16. It worked in another computer that I PULLED it from. But it was also built in 1995, it could just be old. But, I also have a SoundBlaster 16 Plug & Play. I will swap it in and see if I have the same results. Can this thing take any more RAM? Maybe you just have too much running at start-up in msconfig. You might try changing the swap file location to a different hard drive. Can get problems like this if it is on a drive that is getting close to full. Here is how to move the swap file location in Windows 98.

1. Click Start / Settings / Control Panel and double click the SYSTEM icon.
2. In System Properties click the performance tab.
Click the Virtual Memory button.
3. Select the option "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.
4. Specify the hard disk drive where you wish for the win386.swp file to reside.
