Solve : "APPLICATION NOT FOUND"?

Answer»

I keep getting the error "Application Not Found" when I try to run anything and when I try to open something as simple as the Add/Remove Hardware Program.

The bad news is, I bought this computer at a pawn shop and do not have the start up disk or any other disks for that matter, I can not afford to take to a shop and I just need to know if there is any way at all possible to fix it myself?!

Thanks.More info on the machine and what FLAVOR of Windows it is.......It is a hp pavilion F1703. I'm pretty sure it is Windows XP.

The exact error is:

C:\WINDOWS\system\32\rundll32.exe
Application Not Found

I am not a computer genius, if you need more info, please let me know! In Safe Mode scan for malware.

Thanks, but I am not sure how to do that. I know that i will turn off machine and TAP the F8 key, then it will pop up something different...but from there I would not have a clue.

Please advise.

Thanks AgainAre you 100% sure about that message?

C:\WINDOWS\system\32\rundll32.exe

Should read "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe"

Open a command prompt and type

DIR C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RUNDLL*.*

press return.

What files are listed? How exactly do I get to a prompt? What files should be listed here? If I do this, will anything bad happen to the data on the drive?

Does this MEAN that you have seen this...and recovered from it in the past?

Thanks so much for your help and response...I am greatly appreciative of it!!!

I took the path in your original post to be a typo ...\system\32\ and put the error message into Google, this was the result, a bit of reading to do. Some problems are associated with malware and I think a full scan with your AV program, fully updated, would be a good start-point.

To startup in Safe Mode please read this article. Select Safe Mode option when the boot menu appears.

To get to the Command Prompt use Start>Run type CMD in the dialog box and click OK. To exit from the Command Prompt type EXIT then hit Enter. Uppercase is used for emphasis only.Does this mean that you have seen this...and recovered from it in the past?

bwaters , when you see what the title is under the name you will know that the

person knows what they are doing and you will get good advice , harryWhen I try to "RUN" the CMD, it OPENS the window to choose the program to open with. It lists all the PROGRAMS...I can not run anything. It seems that your file associations have gone haywire.

Go here and download/run Exe File Association Fix. Read the notes at the top of the site page before proceeding.
