Solve : "Automatically Fix File System Errors" Doesn't Work, etc.?

I should say that I KNOW next to nothing about personal computers.  I am using Windows XP HOME edition Service Pack 3.

A few weeks ago a string of issues came up with out PC:

1. "Automatically Fix File System Errors" doesn't work, and
2. I Can't get into SAFE mode, and
3. Ccleaner's Registry Tab is Grayed Out

Any SUGGESTIONS will be appreciated.  Thank you.
