Solve : Backup files from non destructive Restore?

Answer»

I had some computer issues yesterday and after TRYING everything I could think of, ended up doing a non destructive restore. All of my files were mover to a backup FILE and stored on the hard drive. Now that everything is up and running right again, how do I get the files out of the back up file and back where they belong? Also I lost all my bookmarks, is there any way to get them back.

Thank you so much for any help anyone can give. Can you TELL us exactly what you did?

Also, look here:
We need more information, Please look here.I'm using Windows XP and Firefox.

I'll try to explain the best I can. Like I said I was having comp. issues and I tried everything I could think of to get it running right.
So I restarted my comp. and hit F11 and from there choose the nondestructive restore option. That backed up all my files and such into a file called, ironically enough, Backup Files. Now I found that folder on the hard drive, but I'm not sure of the best way to get all that back to my computer where it belongs.

If there is no way to send it all back where it belongs, what is the best way to get the not so easily replaceable stuff back?

And also I'm guess since things are rarely lost forever on a computer, that my bookmarks are in there somewhere too. How do I get them back? Or can I?What, exactly, is in that folder you found called "Backup Files"?Everything pretty much. All the programs that where on my computer before I restored. Games, pictures, security programs, everything.

Most of it would probably be easier to reinstall new, but alot of it isn't as easily replaced.I think you will have to re install any software that you installed since the computer was new. Data such as pictures, etc, will be in folders that you can just copy and paste using Windows Explorer. if there is a folder in the backup section called Documents and Settings you may FIND a Firefox folder containing a bookmarks.html file.

The standard location will be something like Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\nlqmgqma.default\bookmarks.html

You can use Windows Search to hunt for it.

By copy and paste does that mean to right click on the file? How exactly do i get into Windows Explorer? *duck and hide* Yeah I know that's a stupid question, but for the life of me I just don't know.

And when I search for my bookmarks what exactly should I type into the search box?Quote from: Tinker217d on July 10, 2008, 12:44:56 PM

If that is how you normally copy files and folders, yes.

It's what you see when you open My Computer, and what you, presumably, used to see what files were in the "Backup Files" folder.

Well, bookmarks.html would be a good start.
A non-destructive restore/recovery shouldn't cause you to lose your files.Quote from: SuperDave on July 10, 2008, 03:11:51 PM

I didn't think so either. But I don't know, they are still there, they were just moved. *shrug*Sounds like you used a proprietary 'non-destructive restore' that is built into your computer - if this is correct, why don't you go to the computer maker's website and get the information on the procedure that you used. The site may have all of the info you need to complete your procedure.
