Solve : Best proceedure for intalling Vista 64 bit in place of current Vista 32 bit.?

Answer»

I'm not real knowledgable when it comes to software and OS's so please help! I have another 2x2GB of the same memory i'm currently using ordered and also VISTA 64 bit Operating System so I can use the 8GB memory. I'll also be adding another VELOCIRAPTOR HD configured in RAID0.
What is the best way to transfer my programs I use now to the new hard drives and 64 bit OS? Most programs are downloaded, some from disc, so will I be able to re-download the 64 bit versions without having to re-purchase the software or will it just be a case of downloading the 64 bit drivers for what I already have.
I just built this PC a couple of weeks ago so there is not a lot of programs installed yet so would it be better to save everything I currently have to my external drive then transfer it to the new OS and HD's when I get them installed or should I plan to download / re-INSTALL everything from scratch.
With limited time off work lately I haven't done much RESEARCH yet on differences between 32-64 bit OS's so any suggestions are welcome.
Oh, and is this the appropriate forum for this topic or should it be in 'Software'?
Thanks,
MikeWell install it like you would (put it in and turn on your computer and boot from cd) and reformat and then just install. Make shure you back anything up you need.I think I can handle that part okay except for maybe the RAID set-up, but my motherboard manual covers the RAID part pretty well so hopefully I'll make it through that part okay. I guess my worries are more about what problems I'll run into with the 64 bit operating system. I've read so many post that say they had all kinds of problems running some of the programs that ran fine on the 32 bit system, even programs that are suppose to be compatible to run on 64 bit and with 64 bit drivers ect. But then again I've read some post that say Vista 64 bit runs fine with the majority of programs. I guess I may be getting the cart before the horse and I need to wait till the OS gets here tommorrow and see for myself. I was hoping to get some ideas of things that are common known issues when making this change. Thanks for the reply computeruler.
Anyone else? All the cries about apps not running on VistaX64 are a bunch of horseradish....
I've been running it since Christmas and have yet to find this happen...with the exception of an old app i have in my toolkit that was designed for Win98.

The most important issue for you since you are making the move is to make sure to collect 64bit drivers for all your devices...

Other than that you should be GOOD to go...Excellent! I have my bedroom window open right now listening for the UPS truck to deliver my package. I have everything backed up to external disc and am ready to make the changes. I may not be back online with this computer for a day or so until I get everything up and running and secure and all 64 bit drivers installed ect. I'll be sure to post in this thread on my status with the 64 bit OS.
Thanks guy's!!! Best of Luck and we'll seeya soon...Take a pic of him! The delivery people are so under-appreciated. Without them we wouldnt have computers in our houses
