Solve : Best Way to Remove Norton in XP Pro?

Answer»

Thanks in Advance

I'm trying to remove an older inactive version of Norton.

I've tried the AddRemove function in Control Panel although Norton Antivirus isn't listed here, so I tried to use the uninstall in the "Norton Antivrus" Program Group but with out success only to find that a message appears informing me the program may currently be in use, so I checked the icons in the System Tray and in the Hidden Icons so I COULD "Exit" or close the Program but there is NO icon in System Tray or the Hidden Icons.

The Only place I can find Norton Antivirus is in the c drive under program files but when I attempt to manually delete the folder and its contents I find that a message appears informing me the program may currently be in useAre you replacing this program with another Norton product?

Personally...I wouldn't recommend it becuause Norton is such a resource hog.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool for your product.

Do not run this tool if you have another version of Norton installed.I have had problems with the removal tool.
I WOULD suggest that you give it a shot and if your not happy than format and reinstall.

I also agree with saviour, Norton is a resource hog even if it may be "decent" at protecting you, you will do MUCH better with a product such as Avast.I agree with Saviour, too. That's why, I think, atomic bomb type solutions are not necessary.
Even, if Norton Removal Tool will leave something behind, we can always check HJT log.I had a machine that had norton AV installed. I ran the uninstall tool and everything was fine...or so I thought. About a week later I got an error that said that norton's live update couldn't connect. I ran that down to a regisrty key. A few days later got another error and as I started to read it on the screen I got a blue screen and the system locked up. I was able to boot into safe mode and started to LOOK around when the system froze....than safe mode failed.

Laugh make jokes...all I can say is that I lost files. If I have saved and than reformatted and reinstalled windows I would have had the files still.

Norton is as bad as malware.

That's where HJT comes in for double check.Quote from: Spoiler on June 05, 2008, 12:27:21 PM

How did you lose files? They were still on the hard drive. A parallel install of windows into a new directory without formatting the drive would leave those files intact and work perfectly well. There's never a reason to lose files unless you have an actual hardware failure. If the data is on the disk, you can get it.I was under the gun to get my computer back up and running fast. I needed to setup my Citrix client for work. I didn't think things though and did a format and reinstall to get me up and running ASAP.

It really was a shame...I lost a lot of STUFF that took me a while to download.

How to Remove the Norton Virus

Each step is important so you may want to print this out...Try through safe mode.To my understanding you have to remove most Norton anti-virus through safe mode, unless im mistaken.Quote
