Solve : Blank screen at startup? |
|
Answer» I am getting a blank screen now at startup on my Dell Latitude 400. I do get the Windows XP screen then when it should display the USERS screen, nothing?Do you have virus protection? Have you installed any new hardware/software lately? [glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, Norton antivirus. If you have the OS installation disk you can run the RECOVER console by booting thru the disk to the setup screen and pressing "R". That will take you to what looks like DOS and can type "Help" Look for the function called Bootfix (verify the actual file name) then type that and have it replace your system boot up and see if that helps. goodluckhmm, I can't type the letters Help in. They don't show up at the cursor. Is that why its called a "cursor"? GeoffCurses! Foiled again! Well, not yet. Your keyboard may just be having problems. Try unplugging and plugging the keyboard back in. If that doesn't work, try blowing the crumbs out from under the keys with a can of compressed air from an electronics store. If it still won't work, buy a new keyboard at Wal-Mart for under $10.00, or get one used for under $4.00 at a computer repair shop. If that doesn't work, purchase a USB keyboard to use instead. Regards, Doc Is the battery flat??use the adapter......It can go into safemode but if I try to load normally it stops right before the User window and the screen is black. AC is plugged in and battery is charged.Geoffrey, you seem to be having the exact same problem that 'm having. the screen just stays blank right? no users screen or desktop, neither show up. if you fix this problem, please post EXACTLY what you did here (or in my post). the only new thing that i can recall now is there were UPDATES being installed for xp when i shut it down in the last few days. but that wouldn't cause this all of a sudden, eh? Quote Geoffrey, you seem to be having the exact same problem that 'm having. the screen just stays blank right? no users screen or desktop, neither show up. if you fix this problem, please post EXACTLY what you did here (or in my post). edit: Geoff--how long did it take for yours to startup in Safe MODE? I'm gonna try it again, but mine wouldn't display anything in safe mode either Quote hmm, I can't type the letters Help in. They don't show up at the cursor. Is that why its called a "cursor"? ... Geoffrey: So, are you saying your keyboard works when you boot to Safe Mode but it does *not* work when you boot to the Recovery Console? Doc Yes, the computer works in safemode just fine. Although it does take 3-5 minutes to start up. The symtoms is- The computer starts up shows the XP screen then goes Black not blue or grey. the hardrive is running doing something. Dell sent out a new motherboard and installed it. This should fix it they said as the Dell tech couldn't reflash the BIOS. Nope, same problem. I have re-installed XP too.oh, some of the keys didnt work while in recovery console. wierd.arh new mobo........check the graphics card is seated PROPERLY......refer to the manual to check it out......I can't figure out how the laptop comes apart.....tried taking all the screws out but I don't want to force it/break it. |
