Solve : Blocking Web Site in Hosts File - Windows 7?

Answer»

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium

When blocking nuisance web sites, using the 'hosts' file (C:WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.), what difference does it make when the entries are made in the different formats as follows:

Example web SITE - http://www.mywebsite.com

Hosts entries made thus - 127.0.0.1 http:/www.mywebsite.com

127.0.0.1 www.mywebsite.com

127.0.0.1 mywebsite.com

What does it mean when the 'hosts' entries are made, in each of the three different ways (for the same web address), above.

Thank you.Looks like a homework assignment, but will answer anyways.

-> http:/ is an error where it should be http://

http://www.mywebsite.com is most explicit ... can only redirect http:// to 127.0.0.1 https:// would not be blocked by redirection to home.

www.mywebsite.com is less explicit than the prior ( BUT ... system assumes its blocking only http://www )

mywebsite.com is the least explicit redirection in hosts file ( Where.. HTTP:// is assumed as well as WWW , so it would be blocked by redirection as a normal http://www type website, but any other combination would not. )

I have ALWAYS used the most explicit FULL URL Path/Names myself, as well as its easier sometimes set a browser to block all sites except for sites that have been added to the allowed listing, such as what i did for my 8 yr OLD daughters computer.

Thank you for the most explicit reply. I am troubled by some web pages that pop up advertisements, in spite of the 'pop up blockers' being 'on'. They are full pages that take up the full screen. This happens when I open a web page or/and click on a link on that web page. Along with the page I want, the rouge web page also opens, usually under the page I want, so that I see it only later when I close the page I wanted.

I have tried the 'not allowed' or 'block' method in IE9, Google and Firefox browsers but to no avail. Because I do much 'browsing', I cannot allow only a few sites and block the rest. Any advice would be most welcome.

Regards.
