Answer» Sudden power outage. Black SCREEN with blinking cursor. Windows would not boot. Put in CD of Windows xp. Hit R for repair, got dos cursor. TYPED in chkdsk/r. That ran and then At the command prompt typed fixboot and hit ENTER ("Y" to agree to perform command) Then type fixmbr and hit ENTER ("Y" to agree to perform command) Typed EXIT. Goes into Windows Welcome screen to continue install(I didn't want to reinstall!). But I continued on to see if this MIGHT be a way to repair. Then get a msg on the screen The file 'ialmnt5.sys' on Intel(R) Extreme Graphics Windows 2000/XP Installation Disk needed. Even if I had the disk for that, the computer is now frozen and cannot do anything (not even ctrl/alt/delete). Can you tell me what I can do without having to go through a whole reinstall? I am new to this and really need help. Dell Windows XP Home Edition. Thanks! TTake the CD out of the drive. Power down. Start back up. What happens?I get the Dell logo->windows screen then "SETUP is being restarted...." Then the msg "Please insert windows xp home ed service pack 2 cd". I do that and it runs "Preparing installation" that runs for maybe 5-10 mins then Then get a msg on the screen "The file 'ialmnt5.sys' on Intel(R) Extreme Graphics Windows 2000/XP Installation Disk needed." and it freezes. It will not read any CDs in the drive and cannot do anything (not even ctrl/alt/delete). PLUS it will not power down. I unplugged the power in the back to shut it down.Try booting into safe mode. Can you do that? What model Dell? Is the XP an OEM Dell CD? The ialmnt5.sys file is a driver file for video cards. That means that you need to find the correct file for your video card. Your best bet of doing that is to just re-install your manufacturer’s video card drivers by go saft mod and go Device manager finding VGA driver and uninstall it or Disable for test.
Other hand May your windows have update to SP 2 or 3 and u got CD Windows XP to may conflict with patches or other drivers on each of Windows XP Home.
Thank.
