Solve : Booting...?

Answer»

Helo guys, av just formatted my hard drive that had vista as the operating system so that i can install Windows XP,but then after formatting it,i tried to install XP unfortunately it didnt install giving the error message saying"BOOTMGR is missing",my CPU is meccer,512 ram and 80 GB of drive....so help mi guys to solve this problem....You have to BOOT to the XP disc to install it. BOOTMGR is the Windows Vista/7 Boot manager, which means you are trying to boot to the hard drive.1. Just curious:
a. Did you delete the "Vista" partition and then recreate a new one?
b. Did you just "format" the previous Vista partition?
c. Did you QUICK format or full format?QUOTE from: dahlarbear on March 03, 2010, 06:42:48 AM

Okay, now I'm curious . What DIFFERENCE does it make whether he did a full or quick format? Not sure... To get the correct "bootloader" reference in the partition (or volume) boot record, the partition should be "formated" using the operating system you wish to boot (or its install CD).

I'm not clear on what the "rules" are. I would expect a "full" format to ensure the correct boot record exists for that operating system. I'm not sure if it will always rewrite it or only if a suitable one isn't present.

My guess is a "quick" format would not rewrite the boot record.

To avoid during the research, I would delete the existing partition, create a new one, and do a full format. The only difference between a full format and a "quick" format is that a full format first checks for and repairs hd ERRORS prior to the format. Other than that, a format is a format And just to chime in if he's getting a bootloader error the drive was not formatted properly...And moreover, as BC said above if he's actually booting to the CD he shouldn't get the bootloader error anyway.
