Answer» Yesterday I was watching some videos online when my anti-virus detected somthing put onto my computer. I ran Mbam and it dectected 19 infections, I clicked remove and it asked me to restart. I did. Upon windows XP loading (while blue bar loading bar is going) I get a BSOD(even booting to safemode). I stupidly did not write down the name of the infection. and all I remember is it started with an 'E' and was a trojan.
Today I put in a new hard drive and installed windows it now WANTS me to register it; however I do not know where my orignal cd sleave with this info on it is.
My question(s)are: FIRSTLY; Is Microsoft going to disable this new copy of XP i have installed if I dont register it? Is there anyway to show/prove to them that it is my copy of XP and that I have to switch HDs.
also: is there anyway for me to recover my old HDs copy of XP? I do not care much about the other software/pictures on it; but It seems to me if I can just get back on my old windows boot I can avoid the mess with the XP registration.
Thank you in advance, If you need anymore info let me know and I'll post asap.1) You mean activate, not register. 2) Just call the 800 number and talk to Microsoft and explain the situation 3) If your AV utility found the problem why did you run MalwareBytes? 4) Yes. Run a boot time AV SCAN on the original hd.How do you run a boot time AV scan without preseting it before logoff? If your current AV doesn't have a cd with a boot time scan included, you download a boot time av scanner and burn it to cd. And again, why didn't you scan with your av instead of (or at least in ADDITION to) Malware Bytes? MB is not an antivirus utility.Stupidity/forgetfulness I suppose.Well, okay. I can relate. If you "slave" the old hard drive in your working system, you can scan it for malware.
You can also retrieve the "Product Key" of its operating system using the Nirsoft utility ProduKey.
Download, unzip the program, and execute it. From the top menu bar select "File ---> Select Source". Play around with the options within the resulting "Select Source" window. ONE of them should work for you.
