Solve : BSODs have me at my wits ends?

Answer»

YES! I did it and it worked! I just did a McAfee scan and it made it all the way thru without a BSOD. That was the first completed McAfee scan since the middle of Dec.

The updating of the chipset drivers was a bit nerve racking. I BSOD’ed in the middle of the nVidia’s install wizard. Then Windows got a bit upset and kept flipping up little “I can’t finds” and “this can’t happen” error messages. Then McAfee realize I had turned it off and kicked in and started yelling “Wait you aren’t protected. You better stop right now if you know what’s good for you.” Luckily I had downloaded to my desktop so I just went back in and did it again. The second time thru it made all the way. But even at first in the beginning right when the wizard started and went full screen, then even it started complaining but politely or course, with a raised eyebrow, asked me if it would be okay if it just slipped down to the system taskbar while I took care of that unruly Windows Install Wizard that was trying to take over or would I like Ms nVidia Wizard to just cancel the whole thing.

At the tail end of the install there was this unnerving message from the wizard: “to install operating system onto SATA disks when RAID is enabled in the BIOS, you must do the following ----- use the “x” option with the package.exe to extract storage driver files. -----follow instructions for Windows F6 installations in “IDE\\driver\ReadMeF6.txt”.”

After the install finished and it rebooted I went searching for this ReadMeF6 file. Windows Explorer couldn’t find it, so neither could I. Then I tried to check in BIOS to see what it was showing for my RAID configuration but I couldn’t find my way thru BIOS to the right spot to check it so I finally called up the CyberPower Tech Support and luckily someone answered the phone on about the second ring. He walked me thru to the correct screen to verify that my Raid settings were still enabled and he also said if they weren’t I wouldn’t have been able to get into Windows with my raid 0 setting. He said that ReadMe file message would refer to a new installation of Windows, not just an update of the chipset driver.

Thank for listening to me work thru this mess and I hope no more BSOD. K
Okay, so I guess I was wrong I still have errors messages but at least not BSOD. I’ve got this message the 2 times I’ve logged on today. Any help on how to make it go away? The long verbage was after the error box that I copied out of the Details drop down box. I can’t really tell what to do to SOLVE it even with all that printout.

Would it be connected to my driver update last night? (if not, should I have started another thread with this problem?)

Or maybe it started because when I closed down last night Windows kicked in with auto updates. But, I went to the Windows site and all of the updates showed as green checked.

Both times I got this message I clicked on the Continue button.

Thanks for any help. K

ignore my last post. I googled the error message and it is a McAfee problem again. Strange, but they will fix it. KUpdate: I had a BSOD today when I logged on. And yesterday I had two Windows popup error messages one at logon and again at shutdown. They all seem to track back to McAfee files. So I uninstalled McAfee and then got a new download of it thru Comcast. I think maybe when Nvidia said to not run virus protection in the background they should have said UNINSTALL all virus protections. Or maybe McAfee got messed up by having the BSOD in the middle of the mobo chipset driver download, because as soon as I logged back in after being BSOD’ed McAfee was activated as one of my startup programs and was kicking out messages of being unprotected.

Anyway, after the new install of McAfee today I did a complete scan and found a Generic!Artemis Trojan hiding down in Windows System 32 folder\Macromed\Shockwave 10\gt.exe The Macromed folder’s Date Modified was 8/23/08 which I take it to mean as date it was put on my system, so I wonder if it could have been the cause of my problems. I see a couple more exe files in the folder so I don’t know if McAfee got it all or not.

I guess I will need to do more research. I hope I have no more BSODs K
You should visit our Virus and Spyware Section...most A/V apps are not well equipped to deal with Trojans...they may successfully detect them but that's about it.
Time to bring out the big guns !
Follow the instructions at the top of the page on requesting help and Good Luck to you. Thanks for the suggestion. I was just over there lurking around just now. They were a big help last time I was major infected, so yes I plan on running this by them to see if I'm completely clean. KYou may want to change your protection package as well and DUMP McAffee...you and your machine will both be happier...
They will have suggestions for you.
