Solve : Bundled Windows Problem?

Answer»

Alight, so here's the deal...I'm trying to find a decent laptop to buy that does NOT come with a bundled copy of Windows.  Why you might ask?  It's because I don't like windows and would rather use Linux.

I have already checked with most of the major sellers (Dell, Gateway, HP, ect...) and they all say that they cannot ship a notebook without an OS (in this case Windows).

So...if anyone knows of a place that I can get a decent laptop without the bundled Windows OS I would greatly appreciate it.

Specs of notebook:

Preferablly (sp?) an AMD CPU (~1.6GHz)
512MB RAM
Wireless Card
At least 20GB hard drive space

Thanks in advance for any suggestions your guys might have.Depends on where you're located. If you're in Canada then NCIX is a good choice, in the states I imagine Newegg.com would be a good call or monarch computers. If it doesn't have to be brand new, then eBay is a good choice for some very good secondhand laptop deals.Even if you could get one unbundled, it would probably not affect the cost much, unfortunately. These "exclusive" bundling deals are one thing that got Microsoft in trouble in the past, although they were never punished for it. What brands are you looking for? www.gigstrand.com has some nice machines, but they are not name BRANS. Keep in mind that there can be compatibility issues with laptops as they are so proprietary. ThinkPads have historically been very Linux friendly, but I am not sure about the new Lenovo offerings.Hey guys.  Thanks for all the responses, this really helps.

GX1_Man-  I am not looking for a name brand at all, just SOMETHING with the rough specs that I have given and something that runs.

robpomeroy-  I will check eBay out.  Thanks for the info.

Once again, thanks guys.  If you guys find anything else out about this it'd really help.some stores sell there old display models... you could look into that, just make sure you know what your getting, and why cant you just format it and install linux and forget about the bundled windows OS? I could check the local computer store about that.  Also, I don't want to have to pay for software that I don't want and won't use.  Sure it's only 100 bux, but with that extra $100 I could use it to upgrade my SYSTEM specs...I'm pretty sure I can get a gig of RAM for $100Many older laptops can't use a gig of RAM.Well that sucks...guess I'm going to have to get a fairly new one then.Laptop memory isn't cheap.  It isn't?  Man...this is kind of starting to make me angry...
