Solve : can't defrag?

Answer»

I have a gateway COMPUTER, USING windows xp--when I try to defrag I get a pop-up box that says"Disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the VOLUMN" (C) Please run Chkdsk/f. I have tried to type this Chkdsk info into "Run" it tells me it cannot be found. I have tried to search my computer and it cannot be found. I restarted my computer numerous times to no avail. I have even done system restore with no luck. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? How big is your HD? And how much free space is left?

Windows needs 15% free to defrag.Your hard drive has errors which need to be repaired before defraging, else it will spread.

See if run check disk is in there > start \ all programs \ accessories\ system tools \ scheduled tasks

Else click Start button, then Run, now type chkdsk /f
(note the space then /f)

If should come up with a black box and says "Would you like the volumn to be checked next TIME you start the computer" type Y click enter. Now reboot.

Your saying it can't be found, make sure it's typed correctly else boot up using the Windows DISC and go recovery console (R) and type it there. You might need to run a repair on your WinXP.

Once the disk check is completed it should let you run defrag.
