On bare bones hardware consisting of CPU, Memory, PATA HD (for details see below).

Installed XP (early version, OEM).
Then installed SP2.
All works fine. Very pleased.
I am attempting to install add a SATA HD, WDC 1600JS-60NCB1
BIOS reports the SATA drive is there.
Windows does not show it (not there in My Computer).
I am (not yet, anyway) attempting to move XP to the SATA drive.
I will appreciate any advice.

Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002 SP2
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, 2.00 GHz
2 GB RAM

I would recommend going into your Administrative Tools in control panel, then clicking on computer management, then Disc Management.

See if the new drive shows up there, and see if looks ok. You might need to create a logical drive on it. It should look similar to your first drive, (which I'll assume is listed as Disk 0) only it'll need to be Disk 1, and also needs to be assigned a drive letter. Windows probably sees it, but it doesn't know what to do with it at this point.Did you install WD's driver for the SATA ? ?First, in reply to Patio: I did not install WDC drivers, at least not intentionally. That drive was OEM
and no disk came with it. Perhaps I should install them later?

Rainman2974: Followed your advice, and pressed on (dangerously, I am sure) as follows.
Disk 0 shows up, "unknown", 149.05 MB, Not Initialized.
Disk 1, basic, 37.266 GB "On-Line" with 3 partitions.
I RIGHT clicked and selected Initialize.
Disk 0 appeared as 149.05 GB Unallocated. Driver shows as Microsoft, 7/1/2001, v.512635.0,
with "device working properly".
Disk 0 appears in Device Manager, but not in My Computer, HDDrives.
Allocated 16 GB of (SATA) Disk 0.
Now that partition appears as H in My Computer.
It seems all is well.
Can move files to and from the SATA drive H.
As a side NOTE, my keyboard locked up, so I couldn't ask if it was safe to restart the computer,
which might have been the case. Still, with no way to post the the forum, went ahead and powered
off, and restarted. My worst FEAR came immediately apparent with notices of Failed to Boot, and set BIOS
to default and try again. Did so, with not much hope. Figured I was dead, with no way to get more
help. I was amazed and relieved when XP booted, and now all seems well.

Glad it all worked out though, I just went through a similar issue when I bought a 500GB SATA drive and tried to install it. Unfortunately you now have only 16G out of 149G you can access...
Right clik the H: partition/drive in Disk Management and select Properties...report what it says info wise...

If it says 16G allocated then i would travel to WD's site and download the Data Lifeguard HDD utilities and do it properly. There will be instructions on how to use the DLoad to create a bootable CD.

Once that is done put in the CD you created and boot up. Then prepare the drive correctly for use.

When you are done and re-boot Windows will be able to see the full capacity of the drive.
