Answer» I'm sorry for putting this post in the wrong forum. I've re-posted in the internet browsers forum, but please reply anyway if you can help
I had a power out due to a thunderstorm and after my HP m8100n PC came back up I can't use the internet. My ISP checked my DSL modem and everthing is okay. My ISP is Pioneer (pldi.net). I can ping and return is okay with Pioneer, yahoo, google, ect. so I know I do have a connection. I can use mozilla firefox and search google and it will pull up the search page but won't go to any of the sites. The only sites that IE 7 will go to is pldi.net or hp.com and then the pages within are super slow. I use biblegateway.com allot and when I tried it, it took about ten minuets but it finally pulled it up and took another ten minutes to search a bible verse. I currently use AVG 8.5 free anti VIRUS and spybot and windows defender for spyware/ad-ware. I've scanned in safe mode and spybot found cooolwebsearch something? but couldn't remove and promted to run on next start up. After start up scan didn't find anything I think. I'm using windows vista home premium sp2 and I've tried turning off third party services, start up programs, resetting IE and nothing helps. My hp didn't come with a vista cd and I really don't want to reformat from recovery partition. Can any one help? Do I have a virus? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
TimThe only way to tell if its a virus is too do a virus scan. Download avast home and set it too do a boot time scan but make sure the virus database is updated its all free.
I would say try restarting the modem. If they does not work go in to firefox Click Options > Advanced >Network> Settings and tick No proxy.
If this is already ticked Try Auto Detect Proxy settings.
If your system is virus free and you tried the firefox suggestion i would say that its a problem with either your network on your pc or the service provider.
Too check too see if its your pcs network
Click Start > Run and type in the run box cmd or cmd.exe click ok
Then in the new command WINDOW type
ipconfig -renew and HIT enter.
If it shows a bunch of ip addresses and gateways then its not your network and i would get on too your isp. Quote ipconfig -renew and hit enter.
If it shows a bunch of ip addresses and gateways then its not your network and i would get on too your isp. Type this INSTEAD:
ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew
Also, try to restart the modem and router.
If that fails, clear your browser cookies and cache (in both firefox and IE)Thanks for the reply I've tried restarting my dsl modem several times with no luck. I've cleared the cookies, cache, TEMP files etc. All virus, spyware, malware scans are clean, no infections. I don't have a router, just a DSL modem. The isp guy hooked up his laptop to my line and it worked okay. I've flushed dns but didn't try release and renew, I'll try that after I get home this evening. I won't have any access to this site until Monday when I can get back to this computer. My son has a different isp and I'll probably try to take my pc to his house and try to see if it'll work with his connection. Last night I tried a microsoft help url and when I got up this morning (7hrs later) firefox had opened the page but of course when I tried to go to another page it will probably take another few hours to get there. This is driving me CRAZY!!!
Totally frustrated, TimThank you for everyones help. I reinstalled the ethernet driver and all is well.
