Solve : can you change os without...?

Answer»

I was wondering can I change my operating system without changing computers?  Do I have to change the circuit board to do this or what?  I need another operating system for business but can't afford to purchase another computer pc laptop.  Thanks. You can change the operating system without changing anything else.
Depending what you have, and are changing to, you can perform an "upgrade install" which should preserve your settings, files and programs.
I recommend you back up all your data first, and ALSO check your computer against the OS's requirements.  Also make sure your programs will work with this new operating system.
Hope this helps.I have Windows Vista, I heard you can partition the hard drive.  Is it hard to do?  I have to backup everything if I change my Vista to XP for example.?Do you need to run XP on your vista computer? Why do you need XP?
Is it for a certain program?
There a few ways to go about this. What are you TRYING to accomplish?I need the xp for some important business and yet I still need my vista at the same time. This may be what you need for that.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/overview.mspxThis is like getting windows xp or what is it exactly? "Use Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 to run multiple operating systems at the same time on the same physical computer. Switch between virtual machines with the click of a button. Use virtual machines to run legacy applications, provide support, train users, and enhance quality assurance."Will this work if I install the xp with the vista on the other side?  Will everything work properly? Question. Do you have the Windows XP CD and do you have a COA that allows to to go back to a older system? This is more of a legal question, not a technical one.

You said yu can not afford another computer. Is so, you can not afford to buy a legal Retail XP Pro CD with COA.
For much less money you can buy a REAL a business computer with already installed XP, COA and a good warranty. Sometimes people confuse business class computers with game computers, Not the same thing.  Business class means reliable, simple and fully supported. And right now they are cheap, cheap, cheap. And legal. And with solid warranty.  And it works property if you plug in into a wall socket.

And, at the same time, you can play games on the Vista machine next to you.

No I don't have either the windows xp cd or the COA.  I need the windows xp for some on the side business to make a little dough.  That is why I am asking if it would be worth partitioning my hard drive.   If I don't I'll have to find another way of making some. Can anyone tell me where I can download windows xp so I can partition it into my hard drive so I can get the show on the road?  I don't know exactly what I am doing but I need it for my business to make some $$$ and I need the information as soon as possible. Here is a solution that does NOT break rules of the forum or MICROSFT. At this time, you can buy cheap used hardware with a warranty for a fraction of the original cost.  It is a veryu smart business investment.

On the other had, using a pirate XP on a Vista machine is asking for trouble. Not just the legal issue, but it is a pain in *&*^!

What I was trying to say in an earlier post a factory reconditioned hardware comes with a legal XP. And cost less that XP! Do the math!

You buy a naked PC with not mouse, no keyboard, not monitor, even the power cord is missing! But it works! I just got one for $132 and it has XP pro on the 40GB sata drive, has 1GB memory, 8 USB ports, standard VGA output. It is an Intel  P4 at 2.8ghz single core.  An the $132 including shipping inside the USA

No I am not advertising for anybody. Lots of outlets have these. I now find that I could had a DVD drive with it for the same price if I had looked around!

When you are in business, you must have a legal copy of XP! Buy a refurbished factory certified  desktop and you have what you need!

Don't risk trashing you new computer. Buy a good used warranty box that will do the job.

Do the math. It is very hard to get a real retail XP CD that will install on any machine for less that $140.

If you buy a XP CD without the COA tag and product key, you may be getting a stolen or pirate copu. The refurbished PCs from the factory have real legal OEM versions of XP.

to find a refurbished PC vendor, just Google on 'refurbished PC' or pick a brand name or model name.

My choices is 'Optiplex XP'
which brings up great deals on that model with XP installed.

Of course, you need to check out the vendors reputation.

I was of course referring to the explicit reference to "download" a copy of XP. there is no way that "downloading" a copy of XP is legal.

The barebones kit+COA solution is a nice cheap way to get a legal version of XP on your machine.

Another option involves MS's allowance of "downgrading" with the Vista license. Limitation in that case being that you would need to remove Vista.
