Solve : Cannot drag toolbars to a different position in XP?

Answer»

I used to have my quick launch BAR on my left side of my screen with auto-hide activated, was very convenient for me and freed up task bar space. Since this last install, i cannot move the bar from the taskbar (no, it isn't locked). I even tried creating a folder on the desktop and making a tool bar using it, but cannot move it either. Any ideas? Thank you Good evening jaslyne and welcome back

Click a blank portion of the taskbar.

Hold down the primary mouse button, and then drag the mouse pointer to the place on the screen where you want the taskbar. For example, you may want

the taskbar to be positioned vertically on the right side of your screen.

After you move the mouse pointer to the position on your screen where you want the taskbar, release the mouse button.

If I remember right that is it, Mike that is exactly what i have tried. usually when you do this, a small square appears beside the mouse pointer while you're dragging the bar. the square doesn't appear and the bar does not move. Good evening jaslyne

The taskbar may be locked that is the only way I know and it should work or maybe it had to be done when it was locked? I would try both ways

Hope it works, Mikei have tried both with it locked and unlocked. when i've done it before, it was always in the unlocked state. i can do it on my other xp computer, but not on this one. i know it 'should' work, but it won't, was hoping for some insight as to what would keep it from working. thank you anyway! not a major issue, just an annoyance, unless of course, it's a symptom of a bigger problem that i will discover down the road.Hello again

I know it should there is a reg file that is not right. But on the plus side MS has a fix for it http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253679 just scroll down the page to the bottom.

Hope it work for you, Mike although the fixit program was actually to restore the taskbar to it's original position, i tried it anyway, to see if it would fix the reg key you said might be messed up. i still can't move the bar. so, i don't know at this point. i will do some searching on it tomorrow and see if i can find ANYTHING more. thank you again so much for your time, Mike. Hello again

Try turning the quick launch off and then do it (move it). I know you know but make sure the lock is off. If that doesn't work try GRABBING the task bar by the clock area but still in blank area of the task bar.

That's all I have found so far  In order to undock Toolbars, you NEED to drag the Gripper on the left or top side of the Toolbar you want to undock. The only toolbar that will not undock is of course the Taskbar itself. (Showing open APPLICATIONS).Good evening BC_Programmer

What do you mean on Gripper?

What do you mean on Gripper?

Cursor is over the left-hand gripper of the Quick Launch Toolbar.Good evening BC_Programmer

Thank you after all these years I have never known that as a gripper but it makes since.

Enjoy, Mike aha! tysm! i was trying to grab it in a blank spot, like mskb says. and then on the right-hand 'gripper'. used the left-hand one and it worked    thank you both for your time, much appreciated
