Solve : Cannot Read My Word Documents?

Answer»

I have Windows XP
Trying to read/open my word documents (the icon now looks like a white box with blue status bar/6 buttons on the page) I get this message.

This File does not have a prgram associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

I looked in Folder Options but am none the wiser, I clicked restore default nothing happened.

I have tried to do system restore several times upto almost a month AGO but cant get a restore.

I was able to view my documents yesterday and today I can't.

In between that time I got a message SAYING pc was running out of space and to click on icon to clean up
disc space. I checked the boxes it recommended and also the Windows components it suggested I can't recall what they were though.

After doing that I wasn't able to view my documents. I downloaded Wordview but that's useless as I can only read my docs and not edit them. I don't have any Windows XP discs aside from the motherboard disc that came with the computer. Hoping it's a simple download to solve, thank you in advanceHave you run an anti-virus and snti-spyware check?

Try this...as a stop-gap measure...right-click the doc you WANT to open, choose 'Open With', then choose Wordpad.  Does that open it.  If it does then you should be able to edit your doc.

Have you reinstalled Office?

Yes Alan I have both adaware and spytbot along with registry cleaner and AVG which does a daily scan.
When I right click on doc to open it says open with... and nothing else, then I get the POP up box saying Windows cannot open this file, it needs to know what PROGRAM created it. I didn't purchase any specific program, it's the standard window document program that comes with windows xp...I only have notepad.

I haven't reinstalled Office as I never had Office on my pc. Yesterday I needed to view documents urgently so temporarily downloaded WordView which let me read but not edit any docs.  I appreciate your taking time out to help Alan thanks anyway.
The title of your topic was poorly chosen.  Since you don't have MS Office installed, you DON'T have any Word files.  You may have Wordpad files or Notepad files, but you don't have Word files because Word files are only created by Word, which is part of Office. It sounds like you dont have MS Office Installed but if you can afford the MS office then here download this OPEN OFFICE it is free http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.3/index.html?focus=download Hope this helps..Thanks for the help, I've also found anything I download off the net I cant open getting the same error message. I'll try the download you suggested. Quote

I'd also recommend Open Office.  It's free, looks similar to Microsoft Office applications, and it reads/creates Office files.  I use it and love it.Downloaded Open Office and yes I agree it works great. My issue is resolved. Thank you forum for help.
