Solve : cant change color or pixels?

Answer»

I would appreciate any help. My computer is stuck on 640*480 16color. I try to open a document and it tells me that I need at least 256 COLORS and to change. When I try to change in the display settings, it wont let me. I slide it to the right and when I push apply it goes to tell you to restart, but you can see that it slid back to the left as I pushed apply. If I restart it stays at 640*480 16color. It always worked before and I havent installed anything! I turned my computer on and it looked like this. It looks like its in SAFE mode, but its not. I would appreciate help We need more information. Quote from: kpac on August 12, 2008, 11:11:21 AM

We need more information.
I have window meWow - that sucks!  Hard to tell right off what is happening but - I think some more info here might help.

What machine and OS - what GRAPHICS card (on board or seperate) ..... any recent changes/additions prior to this happening.?

If the slider is trying to return to that basic vga setting - then something has to be amiss with graphics driver perhaps ... look up in hardware manager and see what it says re display.  What is the top res option on the slider bar?  Useful to know that too.

You should also be able to opt for a review of a res' change without reboot ...... which saves some time.  It should ''try'' a different setting for several seconds (normally) and ask if that is OK or not.

OK - just seen - Win ME - but what other info can you give us. Quote from: ChrisXPPro on August 12, 2008, 11:14:49 AM

Bear with me. Im computer stupid!!!!!
Ibm 9511 T540TFt Monitor on Intel[r] 82810E graphics controller
windows ME Intell celeron processer 127 omb ram
Top res 1024 *768 High color{16bit}.
All I did was copy a colored document, closed down works, then turned off computer. I turned the computer on and the graphics were messed up and stuck! Thanks.Hmmm - well - can't see that copying operation as being a problem normally .... so won't blame that.

What I am thinking tho is you might have a problem with your graphics card/controller - because everything is defaulting to this ever so basic VGA ...... and even tho ''settings'' shows 1024 x 768 as being ''AVAILABLE'' - the graphics is not delivering.

Your RAM is pretty modest but that should suffice for ME - but wonder if the graphics makes use of RAM to help it along and therefore if the RAM is at all compromized.

Not much help so far - but hang on and let's see if other folks have any ideas.  My vote is still for breakdown of graphics hardware.

Oh and - just check in ''Device Manager" to see if device is reported as OK and functioning - under display adaptors.Could it be a virus messing with your display settings?
Are you sure you haven't downloaded or installed anything lately?

I'd do a virus/spyware scan before continuing, just to make sure. Can you change your resolution under Display Settings, or the slider doesn't move? Quote from: Broni on August 12, 2008, 07:28:50 PM

I can move it but when I push apply, it slides back by itself. Havent installed anything. I basically only use it for word or works. It seems to have a mind of it's own because this all started when I turned it on and  today when I turned it on, it couldn't find the operating system. Im about ready to throw it out the window!!! ThanksDownload fresh video driver from here: http://www.intel.com/design/software/drivers/platform/archived_inf.htm
Uninstall current one, install fresh one. Quote from: Broni on August 12, 2008, 11:04:24 PM

thanks, I'll tryKeep us posted check in display setting to see if it has a generic VGA monitor listed or is it specifying your monitor?
It could be malware.... try spybot to see what it may find. Quote from: believer on August 12, 2008, 11:38:13 PM

It's an IBM 9511 T540TFt monitorIt's and plug and play and states that the best dreiver windows FOUND is already installed for this device.
I don't know how to check if its damaged. I ran scan and defrag and all was good. thankstry to put it as generic and see if that may help troubleshoot it. If it allows slider to move and stay that way then you have foudn the problem...bad driver for your monitor.
