Solve : cant play videos?

when i TRY to watch VIDEOS on media player it says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file"
really need help with this , thanksWhat VERSION of Media Player is it?

It plays about every video I have CAME accross. media player classic, maybe the video format is mov. For videos I can not get to play I burn it to a dvd with convertx to dvd. Lots of bad guys lurking in CODECS - be careful where you download from.

Ditto for me with VLC - this is a FREE player that I use to play the stuff that Media Player can't/won't play. Check it out here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
