Solve : cant run windows update?

Answer»

I just tried to run Windows Update for Win98se. I go to the website it looks for critical updates then wants to download Microsoft Update I say yes it starts to download. Then it says I have to be an Administrator to do it. It then asks to download Microsoft Update again and again.
There is no Administrator Function on 98Se that I know of. Is this Microsoft's way of making me upgrade to XP ? Are there multiple user accounts on your computer?
Is this computer networked, or having any variety of NT_AUTHORITY on it? My understanding--from what I read a month or so back is that microsoft is no longer supporting 95 98 98se nor ME any longer, that is including any updates. Quote from: StillSmiling on June 11, 2007, 09:22:53 PM

They are no longer applying security updates, but they should still allow you to download the updates. As far as I know the latest version of Windows Update can be DETERMINED by looking at the address bar after navigating to the Windows Update page...

You'll either see a v4, or a V6 somewhere in the address bar...after navigating to the Windows Update page.

I'm quite sure the latest version is v6.

You may want to look in Internet Options/Settings/View OBJECTS...not sure if its the same for 98SE...however, what we're looking for are the following:

1)  WUWebControlClass

2)  MUWebControlClass

If you see either one of these, you may want to delete these two objects...afterwords, CLEAR your temporary internet files and revisit Windows Update.  You should be prompted to download and install the Windows Update Active X Control...proceed with the download and installation.  You may have to reboot the computer.  Revisit the Windows Update page and you may see the page asking you to download and install Microsoft Update.

If it fails, again, you may want to see if v6 is part of the address bar.  If it is, just go to the link on the left of the current page that states "Change Settings".  Make sure you select Windows Update instead of Microsoft Update.  You can always visit the Office hoimepage to download and install the latest ActiveX control for updating you Office products.

Some things that may prevent you from Updating your operating system are malware, corrupt files and or a pirated copy of Windows installed on your system.  As we all know, validation is a major issue with Microsft and can be a real pain in the neck...only 2 feet lower.  So give the above a shot and let me know if you have any issues. The problem with trying to diagnose a 98SE problem from XP is like trying to diagnose a human problem from a Chimp.
Because I have 98SE I use IE 6 and it does not have those setting.
And the Windows Update Web Page  from under XP has to be different from
98SE because has no "change settings" the web address does start out as V6..but then is redirected to V4.  There I get the download page for Microsoft Update..If I reply yes it tries to download then I get the page saying I have to have Administrator Authority and goes into a loop trying to down load Microsoft Update. I know this is a Valid M.S. product because up until  about a week ago I was able to do it. I had to reinstall windows so had to run updates. Though I think but am not Certain the the web page did not a a V(x) in front of. it I don't think it"s malware since I have AVG free and run Spybot
and Adaware. The only thing that has change was I uninstalled Office 2000
premium  to install Works Suite 2003. But I am having a problem with that.
I think I  will give up the ghost and go to XP (sort if like years ago I gave in and went to VHS from  Beta)
