Solve : Changing Name in XP Home?

Answer»

I have what sounds like a simple question, but stay with me.
Under C:\Documents and settings\John Mc Henry, with John Mc Henry being my name under user accounts (not my real name), I WANT to change that name and windows won't allow it.  It says it is a system file and can't be done.  I want to take the space out of my name.
I've tried going to user accounts and changing it alos, but that doesn't change it under Docs and settings, only in User Accounts.  I've tried changing it in safe MODE also with no luck also.
I am the only user on the computer so of course I do have admin rights.
Any ideas other then reformatting and starting over, all for an extra space?  Is there a simple regedit that might work?
FloydRight-click on My Computer and go to Properties.  Click on the Computer Name TAB and then click on the Change button.  Does that work for you?  If changing the name has any adverse AFFECTS, simply follow the same steps to change the name back to what it was originally. You can't do it.
Changing the computer name is not what he's after, CBMatt - it's the logon name, also used under Documents And Settings.
I wanted to change mine a while back, but it can't be done, at least not that I know of.

Oops, didn't catch that.  That's what I GET for posting when I'm tired.  Heh.Yeah the only way to change the name would be to create a new account with the desired name, move all your stuff to the new account and then delete the old one. Quote from: Deerpark on August 08, 2007, 09:33:47 AM

So much havocYeah I just realized I should have put a disclaimer on my previous post. I don't recommend doing this!
