Solve : Changing Reset Settings?

Answer»

I have a computer that has Windows 98SE on it.

The problem i am having is i have no reset button, so i want to change my shutdown button to reset when i press it. When my computer freezes it completely locks up and the Ctrl+Alt+Del does no work so i have to shutdown by pressing the shutdown the turn it back on quickly.

What i want to do is change it so i can use it for reseting.

When i press the shutdown button it auto switches off, i want it so i have to hold it for AROUND 5 seconds before it switches off and when i press it once quickly it resets.

Is there anyway i can change this? Because i fear i could cause serious damage if i continue doing this.  :-/It sounds LIKE the MACHINE has other issues which should be addressed.

Why don't you post some very specific info about the computer, operating system, history, etc.The OS is 98SE, as for history i'm not to sure as i got it for free from an uncle who is a REGISTERED technician...

Some specs:
Pentium 2
350MHz
6 gig HD
Matrox MGA Gfx card (I'd say really old)
I recently installed an ESS sound card which from what i can tell works fine( I think  :-?, i'm at school now so i'd have to check when i get home)

I have also been installing anti-virus software etc lately just for some extra protection.

It's also been freezing rather often, i have had no problems with it as such but ever since i installed AVG it went haywire, but i don't think that is the problem because it's very trusted software and works fine on my computer.

This is the reason i would like to change the reset setting so i don't wreck anything by pressing the shutdown button all the time...

Sorry if this is not enough info, but i can't really do much from school. If the problem started after installing AVG, disable it from running at startup and see if the problem goes away. Or disable its real time SCANNING and see how it works.

EDIT: In 9x you only have two options for the power button, shutdown and standby. If the computer is completely locked up, the only recourse is shutdown. If you still have use of the mouse or the keyboard you can reboot using a batch file. Was WIndows freshly installed? If not you may have inherited problems, possibly made worse by running without an antivirus.

Do you have a CD to reinstall if needed?Sorry for slow reply.

Windows 98SE was freshly installed, i did all the driver updating etc.. so nothing wrong there.

But lately it has been booting very slow (which i suspect is the AVG, so i will disable it loading at boot) and freezing unexpectedly. And when it does freeze i lose all ability to use the mouse and keyboard, so i can't even do a ctrl+alt+del reset.... this is the dilema i am having, because i have to keep pressing shutdown and then turning it back on
