Solve : Changing vista 32 bit to 64 bit?

Answer»

I am thinking of going to a 64 bit operating system. I have vista business edition in 32 bit and have ordered Windows 7 and am thinking of using it in 64 bit. I understand that you can change vista os to 64 bit and that there is a dvd for that purpose from Microsoft. What are the gotchas to doing that? Do I need to do anything in advance? you need a 64-bit CPU to run a 64-bit Operating system.and less driver and software compatibitly
on 64bit os

Not neccessarily true...how long have you been running Vista 64bit ? ?

dgriffin i suggest collecting all your program CD's for re-install...back up all your important data including email contacts; TEXT files if any and anything else you want to save...

Unfortunately there is not a smooth in place transition from 32bit to 64bit OS's in place for Windows...they have the files and settings transfer wizard but after having that fail miserably on 3 different machines for me i WOULD not recommend relying on it.
Count on doing a FULL clean install and re-installing all your apps.
So those backups are important.
Good Luck and let us know...and windows will not run any drivers that aren't digitally signed by Microsoft without the help if a third party tool .... Quote from: 2x3i5x on August 12, 2009, 06:48:44 PM

that's not a 64-bit specific PROBLEM, though.

It doesn't really need a third party tool... just a boot switch.
