Solve : command interpreter?

Answer»

I made a windows startup disk, 98, and now I can't get out of this and return to windows.  Each time I start the computer, I'm in the Dos start up program and it continues asking me for the COMMAND interpreter.  I have been at this for days!  Please help Take the floppy out of the disk drive.  Restart. The floppy was taken out but computer still starts like the floppy is still in there and continues to go into the start up Dos program The program in Dos continues to ask me for the command interpreter and I can't exit this program and I can't return to windows. Please help.Is there a CD in the drive?  If not, it sounds like you might have changed your hard drive.

What happens when you type "win"?it says INVALID path.I have not changed my hard drive only a system restore.  I didn't have any problems except getting my D-Link Router to work; then I made a startup disk and now can't get out.Something has obviously been changed. If you are RUNNING W98, there should be about 3 COPIES of command.com on the hard disk. They will be located at c:\command.com, c:\windows\command.com, and c:\windows\command\command.com. When it asks for the location of the command interpreter point it to one of these locations. If it still can't find command.com, reboot with the floppy and at the a:> prompt, type sys c:, remove the floppy and reboot.

Edit: Limit your question to a single thread. Posting the same thing in several threads only CAUSES confusion and will not get you the help you need any faster.I entered sys c: at the a prompt and it said, system transferred; when I rebooted, it when back into the same dos mode at start upIf you removed the floppy, you should be at the c:> prompt. Type cd\windows then winIt now says  device or resource by VFAT is not present or unavailable.  System halted.Try to boot into safe mode (NOT safe mode with command prompt). Hold down the Ctrl key while the computer boots. This should bring up a menu to let you choose safe mode. If successful, go to start/run and type sfc. Click OK. If it finds files that have been deleted or corrupted, restore the files. If you cannot boot to safe mode, you will need to reinstall windows.I am in the dos program, there is no start or run; it all has to be in dos at the A prompt in the start up program (no disk is in); each time I restart, it always goes to this. You don't get to an A prompt unless you boot from a floppy. Remove the floppy disk, shut down, follow the the above instructions. But there is NO floppy; there are no cds; my computer goes to the "a" prompt from the start up every time I reboot...just as if there was a floppy in.
