Solve : compaq presario v2000 has some program that doesnt let it shut down right away?

Answer»

Hi all,

I noticed that my computer has been getting slow lately, and I couldnt figure out why.  I did the malware scan (malware bytes), I did registry cleanups (glary utilities), but everything came out clean, no errors reported, well the registry clean found a few dangling entries that it DELETED

When I try to shut down the LAPTOP, it doesnt shut down right away, rather it gives a message saying windows is waiting for  program to shut down.  And then five seconds later it shuts down.  What could this mysterious program be that is slowing my computer?
1) NEVER use registry cleaners. They CAUSE problems, they do not fix problems. There is no such thing as a good registry cleaner, only some that aren't as bad as others.

2) Here are some steps you can TAKE to try to speed up Windows Shutdown. Before editing the registry, be sure to either create an image of your system partition or backup the registry. If you don't know how, please ask.

 a) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

b) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

c) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000Allan,

I will try everything you said, but can you explain what the different steps do?

Also, why did my computer do this when it wasnt doing it earlier?  Is there anyway to find out what that program or process is that is CAUSING a SLOWDOWN
One thing, did the error message say anything specific? Or just some message indicating that windows is waiting for some unknown program to finish exiting first? Quote from: shashgo on April 12, 2011, 12:35:17 PM

Allan,

I will try everything you said, but can you explain what the different steps do?

Also, why did my computer do this when it wasnt doing it earlier?  Is there anyway to find out what that program or process is that is causing a slowdown

The pagefile setting is probably not the issue, but if it is set to "on", the pagefile is deleted before shutting down and that takes a long time. It then has to be recreated on the next boot.

The other settings reduce the default times for apps and services that "hang", or do not shut down properly, to be killed by the OS.2x3i5.....: yes the screen just says "windows is waiting for the following program to close".  And under it it has to buttons "force restart" and "wait"

allan:  Basically what you are showing me is how to make the computer not wait before it shuts down.  But the erroneous program is still going to be an issue.  Is there anyway for me to find out what is causing the strange behaviour.Control Panel - Performance Issues & Tools - Advanced Tools - View Performance Details in Event Log
Look for items in the Task Category column with the title Shutdown Performanceallan:  I went to that Event log and there are a few items listed there as causing a delay in shutdown.  But why are these items causing a delay nowadays when they didnt earlier like when the computer was newer?

I went through the entries for the 4/13, and these are the files that are causing the delay: lsass.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, PNRPsvc (its a PNRP service dll).  I know what iTunesHelper is and  probably have to stop it from msconfig from being loaded each time, but what are the other two entries and why are they causing problems

I have no idea.okay.  I did follow your previous post and now the shutdown is quicker. Thanks
okay
