Answer» Hi. Trying to fix a friends laptop and need some help, the machine is a Toshiba satellite pro c660 Intel core 2 duo. 2 gig ram running win 7 home premium.
The machine is very slow on start up and lags when opening programs and is the same in safe mode, I have run SFC/ scannnow no problems.
Looking at the events viewer is just a mass of errors and warnings any one have any ideas what is happening?
This is just a part of it, it goes back over a few months.

Are there any yellow or red symbols?
Also, please run full scans with both the installed AV and MalwareBytesHi Allan. I have run bit defender and MalewareBytes all clear, no there are no red symbols in device manager. If it happens in both regular and safe modes my first thought is malware. If that's not the cause,
1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
2) Let's check the HD: To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.
3) Let's check ram: download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.Hi. I don’t know what is different since this problem started it is a friend computer and it has been like this for a few months so he can’t remember when it started.
Looking at the event viewer the errors GO way back a couple of months, sorry forgot to mention I have run checkdisk all seems O.K.
Will try the memtest tomorrow when I have more time, will post the results, THANKS for all the suggestions.
Sorry, but "I ran checkdisk" doesn't mean anything. Did you run chkdsk /r as I suggested?Hi Allan. Sorry for the delay in REPLYING, yes I ran chkdsk /r but it made no difference, I decided to do a windows repair and re-installed the windows files and all is now well, thanks for all the help.
