Solve : computer emergency?

Answer»

Hi I have a compaq computer at home with a amd processor with WINDOWS sp 3 I installed sp3 and now my computer does nothing but reboot repeatedly. The computer is actually my mom's. I can get into safe mode. My question is can I remove service pack 3 safely.

update I decided to do a system restore on it so hopefully that will workA known problem caused by HP/Compaq: HTTP://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=953356

Best of luck!THANKS drmsucks I'm doing a restore point to yesterday so hopefully it will work. the weird thing is that I have a amd processor on mine and knock on wood everything is fine. Granted I still have the 754 socket and hers has the 939 socket so it must affect more of the newer boards than the older ones.Hey I just wanted to let you know that everything is back to normal on my mom's computer. The restore workedBrett - GLAD that you are back in business!

It's an issue with the drive image HP used for the operating system - even on the AMD configurations they included an Intel driver that gets 'activated' with SP3. Perhaps they used a different image on earlier drives. Before you update your mother's computer, check the HP (Compaq) website and see if you need to apply a patch prior to UPDATING.
