Solve : Computer freezing at Welcome screen?

Answer»

I've been trying to resurrect an old Pentium 111 computer with 256mb of RAM for my daughter. It was working 2 months ago but today when I hooked it up, it would freeze after boot but now it's freezing at the Welcome screen. I re-formatted and installed XP Home twice with no luck. I can run it for hours in safe mode and even had Ubuntu running for about one hour. This makes me think that there is nothing wrong with the PSU. I've reset all the cards and memory card. I tried to do a repair but I keep getting this error: Which Windows Installation would you like to LOG onto and it gives me 1 C:Windows. When I select 1 nothing happens. I just tired a USB mouse and it stills hangs at Welcome. Any Ideas what else I can try?How is the cooling? Do you think this may be an issue here?I don't think heat is the problem. I have the side off and all the fans are running. Wouldn't it produce the same amount of heat in SafeMode" It can run all day in Safe Mode. I even had Ubuntu running for about 30 MINS. before it froze. I think that points to a hardware problem. I'm going to see if my neighbor has some memory that I can install for a test. Is there any other tests I could run in Safe Mode? How about, if you post your computer temps, along with processor info?

Nope, because Safe Mode pretty much REQUIRES no processing power as you have almost nothing loaded.I'm going to install Speedfan and get some readings. I've been running  a RAM memory test most of the day and it's finding no errors in the RAM. I'll post those results when I get them. I'll also hook up some speakers to listen for any beeps. I have got a really good idea.
Go to the store and buy a new computer for you daughter. Quote from: qinghao on August 19, 2008, 01:20:43 PM

Why didn't I think of that? But, that's not the green way. Thanks for the useless advice. Quote

This is a Help Forum...
That means stay focused on the issue at hand and don't throw out useless comments or advice.

Consider this a notice.

patio. Can I get back my words:)Broni, I installed Speedfan but it won't run in Safe Mode. I just keep getting "needs to shut down" I tried booting with a large fan BLOWING in the side and it still freezes. I ran a 6 hr. diagnostic of the motherboard and it CAME up clean as did the RAM check. I went into the events viewer and I found lots of VSS and EventSystem errors.
Quinghao, I could stop off at a store and buy a dozen computers but that wouldn't achieve my objective which is to learn how to fix these bloody machines.I'm starting to think it might not be a cooling issue.
Seeing as you can boot into Safe Mode but not Normal Mode, there has to be some sort of Startup Item [or something].

I suggest posting a HijackThis log here.

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthisI'm going to try another re-format. If that doesn't work, I'll try running HJT in Safe Mode since that's the only way I can get the computer to function. Hmmm....All right then.
