Solve : Computer keeps restarting - really desparate?

Answer»

Hello everyone, sorry if this is in the wrong place but I really need help.

I have an emachine 820 desktop which runs on windows xp.

I turned on my computer the other day and got a black screen which said that there was a bad startup, and that I should chose to logon on in safemode, or use the last known working system which was to start Windows normally.

I selected it but before it gets to the logon screen the computer just restarts after the windows icon comes on.A blue screen flashes up with ome text but I can't read it as it goes so fast. I have tried starting in safemode but the same thing happens except that the windows icon does not appear.

I haven't installed any new programs recently, nor have I added any hardware.

Is there any way of getting the compter to work? I really don't want to lose my files on it because I am doing exams and have not backed up my data recently.

Any help really appreciated.Do you have a real Windows CD, if needed, or a restore disk or what?

I would try downloading and BURNING a Linux Live CD and see if it can boot with that properly. It will not write anything to the drive, so your data is safe. Knoppix is a good one, or Ubuntu, etc.GX1_Man,

Thank you. Have downloaded and burned ubuntu and it's now running on my PC.

Hopefully I can get things moving from here.

Incidentally, I called PC World's "Helpdesk" who said nothing could be done and wanted to charge me from £25 the privilege of trying to RECOVER my files and then wiping the hard drive.

If it means anything, I think you and others on this forum are worth more than all of PC Worlds STAFF put together.

Thank you again.Quote from: wonderdunder on MAY 22, 2007, 08:42:07 AM

That's not saying much. Lol! I know,

What I meant to say was that this forum and the people who contribute are brilliant beyond words! The staff at UK PC World are trained to NOT tell you what is wrong, even if they know bloody well what is the matter with your PC. They have to say, "Bring it in for a £40 health check". They face disciplinary action or the sack if they go against that. They don't mind, they're all muppets anyway.

I gathered....

By the way, I have managed to save all the documents I wanted.

Is there any way of using ubuntu to get my PC going again without having to wipe the hard drive and then reinstall everything? I've tried running antivirus programs on it, but ubuntu won't have it.

I'm not very computer literate in these matters, so apologies if I seem to be asking a rather silly questions.

Thanks again. There is an option of a Repair Install of XP provided you have an MS XP CD and not an OEM restore disk...

I suggest reading through it to become familiar with the procedure and printing out a copy for reference before you start...

If done properly you will be back booting to XP with all your programs and data INTACT...Thanks for the help again.

I eventually decided to wipe the hard drive and simply re-install. Worked for the better as there were a few things on there that I didn't want, so it is a bit of a forced spring clean.

Thanks for all teh help again.

A good format and reinstall will solve all Windows problems....for a while. I would still seriously consider investing in a new PSU...
It's amazing to me that it's probably one of the most important components in a well running machine and everyone ignores it til it's too late.

But that's just me...
