Solve : computer shuts down when defragging?

Answer»

every time i run de-frag on my system, it shuts down after around 10 minutes. this also happens when i am trying to burn a dvd with nero. this is only a recent problem but it is doing my HEAD in.

i also seem to be missing a load of disk space as well. i am down to 25 gb from 160 gb but there is now virtually nothing left on my system.

i have tried various registry cleaners and anti-viruses but to no avail.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!Welcome aboard

What Windows version?

This may be your CULPRIT. Windows defrag needs around 15% of a free space, 24 GB in your case, so you're close.
Some running programs may interfere with defrag. Try to run it in Safe Mode.
Use JkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/
instead of Windows defrag.
In the meantime go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and RECOVERY and uncheck"auto re-start on errors" which is on by default.

Now on crashes you will get those wonderful BSOD's (Blue Screen of DEATH ) however the info provided in them is very useful in troubleshooting system problems.

Have you by chance installed any new hardware recently ? ?It couldn't be as simple as 'power management' turning of the hd after a SET time could it?
