Answer» Win XP Home.
How can I copy files only from sub-folders without having to open the sub-folders individually please :-?
e.g. I have a folder which contains only sub-folders and the sub-folders contain files only, how to copy just the files, without a folder tree, to another device :-?

I am aware of copying/pasting but want to know if I can somehow select all files within a tree to be copied without creating a a folder/tree on the output device.
I think what Woodman means is that he wants to copy all of the files without copying the folders they reside in.
I could be wrong, Woodman, but I don't think there's a way to do that without manually going into all of the folders and copying the files individually. I don't think you'll be able to do them all at once. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. So you have a collection of folders with files and you want to GET the files from them into one place? There is a trick you can do. I did this using WinRAR.. though I assume WinZIP or other tools should have similar capabilities.
- Select the folder containing the subfolders and right click it and add it to an archive using WinRAR.
- Select compression method to store only (unless you actually want to compress them, there is no point doing so. Store only does not compress files but is quicker).
- If you will be sending the files to another computer without WinRAR select ZIP archive format otherwise it does not matter.
- Now in the Files tab - this is the trick - select "Do not store paths" in the File paths options. Now click OK to create the archive. Once done, the archive will contain all of the files from the subfolders.
- Now put this archive where you want the files to go and right click and select "Extract here". Now all of the files will be PLACED in that DIRECTORY, with no subfolders.
- Delete the archive afterwards if you have no need for it.
HEY presto... that should do the job Well, how 'bout that...someone did prove me wrong. Very good idea, Neil.Neil - Thank you, that's an absolutely brilliant way to do what I wanted and with your instructions I got it right first time using Winzip.
If I lived anywhere near you I'd come round and buy you a pint at your local.
