Solve : Copying stuff from Windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit?

Answer»

I'm upgrading. I have a program with associated files that only loads on Windows XP. The NEW VERSION will run on 64 bit Windows 7. How do I get the 'stuff' on my Windows XP over to the 64 bit platform so I can upgrade it? Alternatively, if I upgrade it on the XP platform, how do I then transfer it over to the 64 bit platform?1) Install the software into the new OS
2) Copy the data files to wherever you likeAllen, my problem is that my current version only loads on Windows XP, my UPGRADE will run on 64 bit platform. How do I get the software copied from the 32 bit platform to the 64 bit platform. Data is easy, programs I have a problem with.Programs cannot be copied from 1 drive to another...it has to be re-installed...You might want to contact the software provider and see if they want to sell you the original 64 bit version at a discount since you have the upgrade.I understand that. My problem (again) is that my original program can't be installed on my Windows 7 64 bit platform. How do I get it there with the upgrade that CAN be installed and run on Windows 7 64 bit.Quote from: Allan on March 01, 2010, 11:36:31 AM

Guess you and I were posting at the same time.May I ask a question.
The 32 bit version of the program can not be installed in the 64 bit windows 7.
Is that right? That is CORRECT. Won't install on any OS after Windows XP. In fact, when I BOUGHT it, I had to drag out an old computer that still had XP on it.1) Install newer version of program on Windows 7 x64.
2) Find the data files or data directory that the older program uses on your Windows XP x86 PC.
3) Copy that data directory to a flash drive or some other device.
4) Unplug flash drive or said other device.
5) Plug flash drive/other device in question into your Windows 7 x64 machine.
6) Find the equivalent data directory for your new program.
7) Copy files from flash drive/device to the new directory.
Launch program
9)
10) Hope for profit!

For steps 3-8, you'll probably have to contact the program vendor for assistance if migration goes beyond copying the data directories or data files from one PC to another (i.e.: If there are SQL or other databases involved). I give that about a 7 to 8 % chance of WORKING...
However...carry on...Quote from: patio on March 02, 2010, 07:20:31 PM

Also, step one will not work- if I understand the issue correctly, the new version is an "upgrade" and requires the older version to be installed, first.IN Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate you get a free download of "XP Mode" which is (1) Microsoft Virtual PC and (2) a preactivated installation of XP Professional on a vhd virtual disk. I have this and am running lots of XP-only software. If you GO this route, you can go to vmlite.com and use "My Old PC" to make a virtual hard drive from your current XP drive and use that instead of Microsoft's Virtual Hard Drive.

If your CPU does not support MS XP Mode hardware virtualization requirements, you can also use VMLite's XP Mode instead of Microsoft's. VMLite is a derivative of VirtualBox. Installation is really easy.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 02, 2010, 07:24:56 PM

The steps I've posted assumed that CowboyDoc has two separate machines: one x86 Windows XP machine, and one new machine in which he is going to install (or has installed) Windows 7 x64 on.

To address the upgrade issue, you can't do an upgrade-install from Windows XP to Windows 7, nor can you do an upgrade install from x86 to x64 or vice versa. However, you can start a clean install with the upgrade disc and feed it the product key from a previous XP or Vista install to make it work.

Once that's done, then proceed with the steps I posted previously.
