Solve : Deleted a partition--no boot--need to edit MBR??

Answer»

Hi all,

I received a used laptop about a month ago.  It came with Windows and LINUX.  I don't know how to use Linux and I was running out of disk space so I deleted the Linux partition and resized the DRIVE.

 Now Windows won't load after I reboot.

It gives me:
"
GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 22
"

I downloaded 'NTFS for DOS' from bootdisk.com.  I can access C drive under DOS.  I can't use FDISK function.  It returns with 'Bad command or file name'.

I'm not sure what I'm doing but I edited boot.ini to the following setting:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" /fastdetect

I've tried what I can by searching online.  I am not very computer savvy.  Anything else I can try to get me to boot to Windows again?

Thank you for any suggestions.The GRUB loader has to be removed properly...do you have a Windows CD ? ?Yes.  I try to run the winnt.exe file in the i386 folder in the Winxp disk but it doesn't work.

It takes me to the blue setup screen and gives me the following:

Setup was unable to install Windows Boot Loader.

Ensure that your C: drive is formatted and the drive is not damaged.

Setup cannot continue.  Press ENTER to exit.

Chkdsk shows the disk working fine.
It was formatted to NTFS.

I don't want to lose the data on the hard drive.  How do I fix this without reformatting my drive?

Thanks for any replies.

Change rdisk, then see what happens

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" /fastdetectI edited the values to 0.  It still won't boot or let me repair XP.  Chkdsk shows no bad sectors and drive is formatted NTFS.

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional " /fastdetectHook up the drive as a slave and retrieve your important data...
Slave Drive Info...

Then insert the XP CD and boot to the Recovery Console...let it finish loading.
At the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.

If no joy-joy repeat the above procedure...
At the prompt type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again remove the CD and re-boot.
