Solve : desktop background disappears over and over?

Answer»

I'm running XP professional. I was unpacking a file the other day with PowerISO and while this was going on, my desktop background disappeared and then reappeared and then disappeared completely. So I just turned the computer off, started it back up and now the background continues to do this. now you see it, now you don't. you always can see and move the mouse cursor though. if I have a menu or control panel or the my computer window OPEN, then these will disappear when the background disappears, and will not reappear when the background reappears. other program windows will STAY open however, but they get deselected (not sure the right word), meaning, for instance, that if i have word processing program open and am typing, I will have to keep clicking back onto the window each time the background disappears in order to continue typing. I've run McAfee's virus scan, run the microsoft malignant software detection and removal program, and neither of these indicate that I have a virus. I've also checked the device manager for my graphics card and it indicates no PROBLEMS. If anyone has ever heard of anything like this, please let me know because this is becoming extremely FRUSTRATING. I'm sorry if this question is not in the right category, I just had no clue where to put it.
Thanks.Welcome aboard

Was that PowerISO file legal? Where did you get it from?
Did you try System Restore?
Did you try Safe Mode?
powerISO was not legal. downloaded from a torrent file. I can't do system restore because I bought the computer from a friend and I don't have the restoration software. I have not tried safe mode. Quote

Possible infection. Did you run that file through your antivirus program, before proceeding?

Restart your computer, and start tapping F8 key....but try System Restore first.

What security programs do you have on your computer? Firewall, antivirus, antispyware...This, unfortunately, is the sort of trouble that downloading torrents can get you into. Most people assume that it's much safer than downloading via P2P software such as Limewire...although it is somewhat safer, it is far from being completely safe. You always TAKE a risk when downloading software illegally. And I've noticed that this particular program is actually often badly infected, judging by user reviews on various popular torrent sites. Out of curiosity, I tested three different PowerISO torrents, and in all three cases, the program came bundled with an infection.
