Answer» Hey everyone,
Im using HP Pavilion dv6 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium.
Ive been having this small but annoying problem. I'm trying to change my desktop background to an image of my preference. If i do it using Firefox on the internet (Right click on image > Set as desktop background), it will display a new window saying how would i like it: stretched, centered, TILE. I select Centered and it seems to be fine. However, restart the computer and the background becomes Stretched. I tried going into display settings and ADJUSTING back to Centered. It allows me to select "Centered" but when i click Apply, nothing happens. So i open it again and it still says Stretched. It seems that i cannot select any other setting besides Stretched.
I have also tried saving the image on my hard drive, set it as my background and then changing the settings. Problem REMAINS. I cannot set the setting to be anything besides Stretched. It accepts my change, click apply and nothing changes.
I have searched about this issue and some people advise that this is a problem with Active Desktop. They suggest to disable it through registry. Ive tried using that method but my system does not have the described path when using RegEdit.
Hopefully someone can help me out with this issue.
It also seems to happen in Windows Vista.
Thanks!

Active Desktop was abandoned after Windows 2000 and was last included with windows XP. This is probably why the "FIX" doesn't work.
More to the POINT- this is a problem with Firefox, I think. It's manually changing options in the registry to change the background image, misses some new keys and values that are used with windows Vista/7, which after you reboot confuses the bejesus out of the desktop, which just defaults to stretched, and then you get the other fun features like only being able to choose stretch.
Best alternative would be to simply download the image manually and set the background that way.
