Solve : Desktop icon problem? |
|
Answer» Windows 7, 64 bit. Hoping you can help. Situation. Switched computer off at night. Logged on next morning and every icon on the screen with the exception of the embedded ones, (Trash can and My computer) were partially overlaid with what appeared to be a page of paper, curled over at one CORNER, with what appeared to be a screen on the paper it with three indistinguishable icons. Every icon was partially overlaid by this icon. The icons still open the programs but the additions offend the eyes. . Can you help. Could you post a screenshot of your desktop so we can see exactly what the icons now look like? Is it just the desktop that is affected, or are the icons in your start menu the same? By the way, I tried system restore, scanned with Malwarebytes and CC , all clear. Will post a screenshot when I find out how to get the Kb level down Trying ::,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Managed to get it down to 268k via "Irfanview" saved it to a png file but it wouldn't "preview" in the post after browsing it to the command line? Computer numpty me Further suggestions re posting the screen shot please? [recovering disk SPACE, attachment deleted by admin]Spoke too soon. Screenshot appeared Hope that helps. Thanks for your interestThat's an interesting one. Have you restarted the PC since this issue began? I would suggest rebuilding the icon cache, looks like it may have become corrupted. To do this, open up a command prompt and type the following commands, hit enter after each line. taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F After the above command, explorer will exit, meaning your desktop icons will all disappear, as will your taskbar, start menu, etc. This is expected, and it's why we're doing this in command prompt. Next type: DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A This deletes the icon cache. Then reboot your computer, on reboot it will REBUILD the icon cache. See if this helps.Cannot see from the pic what the icons say...that may give a clue...Thank you both gents. Calum. Taken aboard but waiting for a mate who is much more conversant with Computers to come around and try your suggestion. I did note that it has seemed to slow down the opening of icons when booted. Patio. I will try an increase the clarity of the screenshot. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Best I can do. Hope this helps. In the meantime, someone else may have seen this before and have an alternative solution, the above was just my FIRST thought to try as I've not seen this before myself.. My guru arrived this morning. Did some MAGIC things With Windows Manager and problem apparently solved. Thanks to all who tried to help; |
