Solve : Dial Up Disconnect Problems?

Answer»

I just fixed a P2, 400Mhz, 320 Mb ram w/win 2000 pro for a friend.
I ran it for a week on my DSL with NO problems & now he took it back & he has SBS - AT&T whatever it is now dial up.  He said he keeps loosing his connection ?  Any suggestion to remedy this. Try different dial up numbers ?
I have it tweaked & nothing is running I even turned the virus protection off.Check the connection properties and see if it is set to auto disconnect after x minutes of inactivity. Some ISP's will also disconnect after a set period of inactivity. Someone picking up an extension phone will cause a disconnect. Call waiting will cause a disconnect if not disabeled before going on line and someone tries to call. The computer is on it's own line & no one is picking up the phone.
I hate it when I work on someones computer & then they have problems.
He has another computer & it does NOT disconnect using the same line etc.
It's a brand new 56K/V.92 Fax Modem. It has modem on hold & that is off. V.44 BLA bla I will play with some of these other settings.
Thanks for the reply.I'm not sure about that modem on hold setting...

Is this a WinModem by chance ? ?

If you can copy and paste the initialisation string here.

patio.   8-)You are talking over my head now PATIO ! LOL  I assume I would do that at his house where the computer is now ?
I have HEARD MENTION of modem strings before I am just not familiar with it.
All I know is the modem is new Hummingbird model # 1MS56S
I have been on DSL so long there is NO way I could ever handle dial up again but he has no choice in his area.I ran it for a week on my DSL with NO problems

Running on DSL doesn't use the modem so you wouldn't see any problem until he hooked up to a phone line & used dial-up...but you already KNEW that

In the wonderful world of computers "brand new" MEANS nothing.  Did the computer have a different modem in it before...did it work?

What did you do to 'fix' it?

Alan <><  More disinformation again...DSL does use a modem as well as dial up...
