Solve : Did you know...?

Answer»

about these strange files? Look at the attached zip file. In it contains two drag-and-drop files. Drag a file on one and it copies it to your My Documents FOLDER, drag it on the other and it creates a NEW zip file containing the file you dropped.

What do you want to know ? ?
Hmmm....interesting.... an explanation?

I'm sure we're aware of the various features AVAILABLE with associations. Both of those EXTENSIONS are both in the registry (HKCR\.desklink and HKCR\.mydocs) and both have persistenthandlers.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe "persistenthandlers" might be able to handle all of the stuff that all other handles can, for example, Drag Drop handlers, Icon handlers, etc. There is far more data that can be associated with a file extensions then a mere "program to open them".

I am unsure how long these extensions have had this feature. If I had to guess I WOULD have to say since Either Windows ME or Windows 2000.

As a short aside, "Icon handlers" are of special interest for some purposes.

For example: there are a number of functions that can be used to extract file information. If requested this can include the files icon. this function is SHGetFileInfo().

The function can also accept a flag that says not to access the file. In the case of retrieving an icon, this means that the icon doesn't get "content specific" treatment. a Example being, for example, "ico" files, whose icon is registered as "%1"... which is to say, themselves. Other programs often register an Icon handler for their files, which means, for example, that a plugin could use word and register a icon handler and show a little preview of the word document instead of the standard word icon.
