Solve : .dll and runtime errors.....?

Answer»
I'm posting this after MANY hours of trying to fix it myself, and I have a couple of questions for those infinitely more knowledgable than myself-
My computer's been acting funny for a few months now (I use windows xp home edition) , and I know it's a problem with the registry.  For one, I keep GETTING an error with certain programs that states "msvcirt.dll" can't be found-and runtime keeps shutting things down randomly.  I've scanned with avg, pctools antivirus, and superantispyware-I have nothing-but I'm pretty sure this problem arose after deleting some quarantined boogers I had a while back.  Hijackthis doesn't show anything out of the ordinary-I've used it for awhile now but would be happy to post the log if anyone thinks it will help!
I feel like a real tard for having to ask for help on this-but I seriously don't want to screw this up any more than it already is.
So my question is, is there a (somewhat) simple way to go about fixing this?
If I run the system file checker, will that do any good?
Are there any GOOD free registry cleaners out there?
And while I'm at it......
If I ever need to do a clean install, what's the best way to be able to keep all of my other programs/settings, etc?  Do I have to use a floppy, or is it possible to BACKUP on cd/dvd format on xp?  I downloaded the ntbackup from my Dell disk-but it requires floppy and I'm hesitant to put blind faith into the program as I've never had to use it.  I live in BFE and use satellite internet-and if I lose all that programming I won't be able to yell for help until the provider sends someone out to reinstall -they don't GIVE program disks, and it took the pro and hour to set it up manually-so I'd be screwed trying to do it myself.  I could get over losing all my other stuff-but I'd die if I lost internet service...."If I run the system file checker, will that do any good? "  Yes, that's a good place to start.  Have your windoze cd handy.

"Are there any GOOD free registry cleaners out there?"  I don't know of any.  I have used Registry Mechanic for years with good results and no problems.

Before you do anything, get into the satellite modem and take screen shots of all the settings there and print them out.  Satellite is tougher to set up than a DSL modem so you are wise to hesitate to make massive changes before you've documented everything.

Back up all your data to any media as well.

Believe me, you won't "die", just be majorly inconvenienced

ok. get ccleaner (without yahoo toolbar) open it use cleaner, then the issues scan on the left menu and save when prompted to ( i would make a folder somewhere where you will REMEMBER and save the backups there) you might want to run the issues scan a couple times to make sure, remember to save back up each time. then go to start run and enter chkdsk /f ( notice the space between k and /f) and press ok a box will open and ask to run on next reboot enter y and press enter. restart let it run, when you get back to your desktop defrag and see if that HELPS any.
