Solve : Do I have 32 or 64 bit WinXP??

Answer»

Following MS instructions, when I go into Control Panel System PROPERTIES I see "AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual" which I think means 64 bit. But, when I go into System Information, I see x86 Process0r which I think means 32 bit? I am confused - please help. Thanks.Good question. You have 32 bit CP running on your PC.
But just to be sure:
How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating systemx86 processors come in 32 and 64 bit VARIETIES. An Athlon 64 is an x86-64 processor. There are other types of 64 bit processor, such as Itanium. Anyhow, that has nothing to do with whether you have 32 or 64 bit Windows. An x86-64 system can run either. Check it like this: go to View System Properties in Control Panel. Click the General tab. The operating system is displayed as follows: for a 64-bit version operating system: Windows XP x64 Edition Version < Year> appears under System. For a 32-bit version operating system: Windows XP Version appears under System.

For example here is what you see if you have XP 32 bit:

Looks like I have a Win 32 bit system. When I go to MS to download MS Essentials, they give me TWO file choices: one for amd64 and one for x86. Which one is right for me? I originally installed MS Essentials so long ago that I do not remember if I was given this CHOICE. Thanks. Quote from: artbuc on May 22, 2012, 02:32:58 PM

amd64 is the 64 bit version - x86 is the 32bit version that you want.

I don't know where you are reading this on MS Essentials.
The 3 choices it gives you are Windows XP 32-bit, Windows Vista/Windows 7-32bit or Windows Vista/Windows 7-64bit.
